If you are a nature or wildlife photographer and regularly submit your work to contests, you know the pain points associated with doing so. Searching for contests, buried rules and requirements, keeping track of deadlines, and trying to figure out what style of images gets traction in what contest...
To alleviate the burden a little bit, I developed an app that consolidates all of this info in one place. At first I did this just for myself, hoping to automate the extraction of contest deadlines that change every year. I missed submitting on several occasions because I had lost track!
The project quickly morphed into more. Why not also consolidate winning images so it is easier to discover the styles and subject areas that win consistently? I often found it difficult to navigate contest websites, and worse, prior year winning galleries would disappear and be replaced with the most recent results, forever losing sight of history.
Once that was done, I thought it might be interesting to analyze all this data and produce a fun leaderboard that tracks photographers across contests and years. Add some weights for contest size and placement, and make it all adjustable to individual preferences - since ranking photography is a very subjective undertaking to begin with.
Well, all being said and done, naturephotocontests.info was born. And it would be a shame to just keep it for myself. So now it's out there for everyone to use. For free. I hope some of you contest photographers will find it helpful and fun to use.
If you do try it out, DM me with feedback or feature requests or bugs. It would be great if this can become a central place to organize and track all major nature and wildlife photography contests. I know some big ones are still missing and working on adding more...
Thank you, and good luck with your next contest!
