As a child, I spent many solitary days exploring the pastures around my home, discovering nature at its' best. Surrounded by farm animals and native creatures of S. Texas, I was comfortable tromping through fields in my cowboy boots, hopping on my horse and taking off to nowhere. In reflecting on who "I am", I see my love for nature runs deep and I'm seeing it in a "new" way through the lens of a

The messy, chaotic world of vultures. We saw so many bones littering the ground on our safari and on this occasion, came across a full carcass. As you can see in these photos, the struggle for position is real! Wings flare, tempers rise, and every bird fights for its share. Though it looks harsh, vulture's are nature's essential cleanup crew, removing remains and helping limit the spread of disease. Note the marabou stork that moved in- they are also skilled scavengers and use their long, powerful bills to reach in and seize food.

Is this not the cutest baby baboon you have ever seen? Thinking this little one is about 6-10 weeks, the newest member of a very large family group that we saw move down the road towards us. What started out as 2, 3 baboons turned out to be 20+ as they poured down a tree and down the road. This momma and her baby stopped just feet from our safari vehicle and hung out for a few moments. The baby was clumsy and silly and oh so cute!

EXCITING NEWS! I'm thrilled to share that I've joined the Tumalo Art Company in Bend's Old Mill District as one of their newest artists. It's an honor to have my photography and ceramics represented alongside the work of such a talented, creative and vibrant group of local artists!

Momma cheetah was moving quietly through the tall grass with her four beautiful cubs when we saw her. We had just left a large pride of lions that were not that far away from where we saw her. I learned that a mother cheetah with cubs lives with a pretty extraordinary problem: she has to raise a family in country full of predators that are stronger than she is. Lions are probably the single biggest danger. A cheetah can outrun a lion, but her cubs can’t—so her best defense is usually to see the lions early and quietly move the family away before there’s a confrontation. After moving through the tall grass, she found a tree for all of them to rest under in the mid-day sun. Safe for now.

This evening, let me introduce you to this incredible cheetah Momma. On our first day in the Serengeti, we were so fortunate to see this Momma and her four cubs. She was taking them away from an area rather near to where we saw our first lion pride. I'll share more tomorrow ... but for now, enjoy her incredible beauty.

About that little squirmish .... ;)
I wasn't expecting this at all but clearly had my camera pointed in the right direction though not all the shots are great - but it does show how quickly docile looking lions can turn into fierce fighters. This male just got too close for her comfort and she let him know! Check out the how her face changes through the sequence- there is one shot in particular that is INTENSE!

The Gol Kopjes Pride, Central Serengeti, Tanzania

One of the first and most unforgettable encounters we came across was with this pride- 11 lions, including two majestic brothers, resting and eating remnants of a kill in the golden grass.

We spent time simply watching them. One of the lionesses with the kill and the younger lions of the pride, lined up at a safe distance, observing her eat, hoping for a remnant for themselves. But one of the males moved in and took what was left and in doing that, the younger lions got a small bone to share.

We also observed a lioness put one of the males in his place and I was fortunate to capture some of the action also. Stay tuned for that. Meanwhile, imagine yourself there, immersed in their world.

As I mentioned in my last post, I was unsure how to bring forth the images from most recent adventure to Tanzania. This morning, I've chosen to tell you the stories behind the photos, so I will group them accordingly when I share. Let's start with this lion. A brother of two lions in a pride of eleven, known as the Gol Kopjes Pride. They live in one of the Serengeti's most iconic lion landscapes in the southeaster/central area, around the rocky granite outcrops of the Gol Kopjes. I did a little research and learned the brothers of this pride are named Mvuto and Jasiri. They embody the majesty of the Serengeti. Stay tuned for more details of this encounter.
