Omgosh it has been a WEEK! TGIF, right? Hustling on the editing today, we had some unexpected things come up this week and it’s been such a weird past few days.

Also, it’s wild to show up to a beach session prepared for full, direct sun, only to be met with heavy clouds and fog! These humans did amazing with the chilly temps and cooler tones, and it was sooooo beautiful!

Childhood doesn’t wait. It doesn’t wait for parents feel confident in front of the camera, it doesn’t wait for the last 10lbs to go away, it doesn’t wait for the perfect weather or for stars to align with nap time. Childhood doesn’t wait. So… you probably shouldn’t either. Get those family photos done now, you’ll thank yourself tomorrow.

What actually happens after your session?

I get something hot to drink (tea, I have a huge tea problem, yall), and then get to sorting your images. The blinking and mid-expression ones are culled out and then I bring each and every individual image into photoshop to polish up. Then it’s brought back into Lightroom, gets a final touch up to ensure consistency and add that last little pop, and then I export based on the needs from the image.

Fact: websites, printing, displaying, and digitally sharing all have different reformatting setting requirements. And each one requires a different type of tea to go with it, too. 😅

“What should my kids wear?”

Answer: whatever makes them feel incredible. The professional in me says look for rich, organic tones. Deep reds and burgandy, forest and sage greens, burned oranges, chocolate brown, black, navy and royal blue, etc. Add visual interest with layers like vests, hats, jackets, accessories, and sweaters, or with textures like lace, cashmere, chiffon, wool, and knitted pieces.

But honestly, if your kid has worn the same Pokémon hoodie all year and you’ve been tempted to wash them in it, bring that. I promise you’ll care more about their confidence and authenticity than a perfect outfit they honestly hated. One definitely translates to photos better than the other.

I feel so strongly that the best images aren’t the traditionally perfect ones, but the ones where you look at and you recognize your people with a deep familiarity. I see A’s quirkiness, T’s adorable and endearing mischief, B’s gentleness and poise, E’s constant curiosity, and Trev’s anchoring point in the dynamics; and all of THAT is what makes these my favorite family photos of us.

Summer is flying by and if you’ve been thinking you need to update those family portraits, let me nudge you to do it! Right now is that sweet spot before the fall/holiday craze and when schedules are easiest to bend around and you wont be drowning in the chaos that is back-to-school and holidays.

No stiff poses or awkward smiles. Just a fun evening making some summer memories with the kids.

As a mom of four myself, I know how crazy photo day is.

But I’ve gotten to photograph this family through maternities, birthdays, Christmases, mini sessions, family sessions, announcements, and milestones of all kinds and every. single. session is SO much fun. Never once, since any of their births, have any of those kids ever been anything but absolute fun. IDK what Brooke and Ryan are doing or how they’re doing it, but these kids approach life with curiosity that has me 100% invested in watching them change the world.

Did I get all emotional and cry on the two hour ride home? Yeeeeeeees. But it was totally worth it.

Btw, Brooke, Trev totally refers to you guys as my “premier clients” lol. Thanks for making the trip out here to let me capture another year of your gorgeous, glowing family!
