As I paused with my camera to admire and capture the beauty of the irises blooming along a neighbors driveway this morning, I noticed something tender happening.

One bloom fully open, reaching outward and just beneath it another waiting quietly, held, sheltered, almost protected as it prepares to unfurl.

This bearded iris reminds us that we are often both at once
the one blooming, and the one still becoming.

I've been observing this mating pair of Tree Swallows out at Lake Lanier for the past couple of days as they get acquainted and decide if they are meant for one another.

Thank-you Suwanee Arts Center for sharing my story behind the capture, “It’s My Nectar.”I am captivated by these fleeting exchanges, tiny dramas unfolding in seconds in my yard. Photographing hummingbirds requires technical precision but more importantly, emotional attunement. I must anticipate not just movement but, intention. My Ruby Throated Hummingbirds return every Spring/Summer and I and my camera eagerly anticipate their migratory return.

It’s my Nectar is available for purchase in the Her collective voice exhibition on now at the Suwanee Arts Center.

With a sensitivity that feels almost devotional, It’s My Nectar reflects Traci Dickson’s belief that nature is not simply a subject, but a presence. Through her Nikon lens, she approaches each scene as an empathic listener rather than an observer, tuning into subtle shifts in mood, tension, and stillness. In this piece, the hummingbird becomes both urgency and grace, its fleeting movement captured with reverence, its fragility honored through light, timing, and intention.
Born and raised on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Traci carries a lifelong love of the outdoors into her work as a photo‑based artist in Suwanee, Georgia. Her nature photography spans the Southern U.S. and has been exhibited widely, including the Georgia State Capitol, the Governor’s Mansion, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, and multiple regional galleries. She is an active member of the Georgia Nature Photographers Association, the Southeastern Photographic Society, and the Roswell Photographic Society.
Her images have appeared in SxSE Photo Magazine (2022) and Outdoor Photographer Magazine (2021), and she has earned recognition in competitions at the Suwanee Arts Center, Duluth Arts Center, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. In 2022, she presented her featured artist exhibition Edge of Wonder at the Suwanee Arts Center.

Weather that makes you go”Hmmm”

Over the last two weeks, Suwanee, GA has experienced near-record highs of 82∘F on March 11 to a short snow flurry on Monday March 16th and this weather has this blue jay and I thinking, “hmmmm”.

Yesterday, I learned that owl ambassador Owl Capone of Blue Ridge Raptors Educational Programs passed away. I first met Beth Thomson and John and their ambassador owls at a raptor education opportunity at Wild Birds Unlimited. My first interaction with Owl Capone was inspiring and to photograph a Barred Owl up close and personal magical. Every time I hear, “who cooks for you” I will fondly think of you.

For years, Owl Capone opened hearts and minds to the natural world. With quiet dignity and soft, knowing eyes, she helped countless people see the wild world a little more clearly—and care for it a little more deeply.
She was more than an ambassador for her species; she was a patient teacher, a steady presence, and a reminder of the wonder that lives just beyond our doors. Her legacy lives on in every person she inspired to look up into the trees, to listen for the call in the night, and to cherish the natural world.
Fly free, beautiful girl. Thank you for being our teacher. The forest holds you now.

I am honored that one of my favorite captures “Feeding Frenzy” will be a part of this traveling photography exhibition.

The Nature’s Generosity exhibition, promoting environmental conservation through fine art nature photography is hitting the road and the first stop is the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Center, Apr. 4-May 30th, 2026 and then we're on the road to Norfolk, VA.

The WWilderness Photography Foundationhighlights the work of photographers using the visual power of photography to increase awareness of the beauty and the value of the wilderness and it's wildlife.

Meditation on Quiet Awareness

During our visit to Sims Lake Park Saturday evening, Scott spotted this Great Blue Heron preening on the branch of a tree and I knew that if I watched and waited, gifts of the moment like back lighting, golden hour, and preening activity would help me to create emotion in this capture.

We gently stepped into the heron’s world without disturbing its calm. I stood at the edge of the lake, and many frames later, I got the capture that represented the stillness, the patience, and the subtle dialogue between creature and landscape.

All around us families gathered for Saturday night picnics, children scootered along the path and walkers kept a steady pace and no one else really seemed to notice the guardian of the pond.

Angels Among Us

With spring bird migration underway, I was thrilled to spot and capture a sitting still, but not for long, Northern Rough-Winged Swallow at my favorite pond.

This common summer visitor flies low over water snatching insects in midair and rests on wires, posts, and exposed branches. It nests in burrows excavated by other birds and mammals, and spends the winters in Mexico and Central America.

When you think of the journey these birds make each fall and spring, you've got to celebrate the fact that they made it back for nesting season!

Her Collective Voice: A Women's Exhibit is on now at the Suwanee Arts Center. Pop on by today, Saturday, 12-4pm to see the complete exhibit and explore the vision, the talent, and the creativity of local area artists.

In my body of work on display at the Suwanee Arts Center, I explore the emotional resonance of the natural world as a reflection of inner experience.

As an empathic photographer, I approach each scene by listening first attuning to light, atmosphere, and gesture before ever pressing the shutter.

A solitary tree illuminated against darkness becomes a portrait of resilience and individuality. A quiet shoreline veiled in mist holds space for reflection and human tenderness. Two hummingbirds suspended midair reveal both confrontation and survival in a single breath.

Together, these images speak to strength, stillness, instinct, and connection. They remind us that nature carries its own voice and when we are willing to slow down and feel, we recognize it as intertwined with our own.

Golden Eye

While I was watching and waiting for more songbird portrait opportunities with my neighbor's flowering forsythia, this agile juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk swooped in between the crepe myrtle tree and the azalea on the hunt for lunch!

While the songbirds skedaddled, he hopped about the base of the forsythia looking for that one cowering bird and eventually, realizing that all had dispersed, he popped up and perched amidst the forsythia branches.

I thought, here goes, shoot through the blossoms and lock focus on that golden eye!
