Lindy’s Diner first arrived in Keene, New Hampshire in 1961 when the Chacklos family purchased a Paramount Diner built in Haledon, New Jersey, and transported it to Gilbo Avenue. Many longtime residents still remember watching the gleaming stainless steel diner arrive on a flatbed truck before being carefully lifted into place.

Since then, generations of locals, college students, travelers, and even politicians have filled its booths for breakfast and lunch. The classic New Jersey-style diner has become one of Keene’s most recognizable landmarks, known for its vintage exterior, counter seating, and tabletop jukeboxes that continue to preserve the feeling of a bygone era. Over the decades, countless presidential candidates and elected officials have stopped in during campaign visits, adding another chapter to the diner’s colorful history.

While Keene over the years has changed around it, Lindy’s Diner remains a reminder of a simpler time when diners served as gathering places where neighbors met for coffee, stories were shared across the counter, and everyone seemed to know someone sitting a few stools away. More than six decades after opening its doors, the familiar sight of Lindy’s continues to welcome customers downtown, serving not just meals, but memories.

In the weeks to come, the Lindy’s Diner sign is set to be removed, restored, and reinstalled by Precision Sign Installation Inc. I am looking forward to working alongside them, documenting the process that will bring it back to life with a refreshed glow for future generations to enjoy.

~HEARTBREAK ON THE LAKE~

Granite Lake, straddling the towns of Nelson and Stoddard, New Hampshire, is a place of remarkable beauty. Its calm waters, wooded shores, and quiet island create a peaceful setting, but local tradition tells of a tragedy that unfolded there long ago. For generations, residents have shared the legend of the "Indian Chief and Daughter," a tale of love, sorrow, and loss that remains closely tied to the lake.

According to the story, an elderly Native chief named Pokahoket once lived on the island with his daughter, Mamowich. The two made their home there in relative isolation until a young French hunter happened upon the lake while traveling through the wilderness. Noticing smoke rising from the island, he crossed the water to investigate and was welcomed by its inhabitants.

The young hunter soon became a familiar presence. He frequently visited the island and often brought game to share with Pokahoket and his daughter. Because the chief was elderly and physically limited, the hunter's help was greatly appreciated. As the months passed, friendship grew between the three, and the visitor spent much of his time along the shores of the lake.

Over time, Mamowich developed strong feelings for the young Frenchman. As summer faded into autumn, she could no longer keep them to herself. One evening, she met him alone and revealed her love. The hunter's response, however, was not what she had hoped for. Whether he did not return her affection or simply had never considered the possibility, it became clear that her feelings were not shared.

Devastated, Mamowich hurried back to the island. Unable to endure the heartbreak, she climbed the granite ledges overlooking the lake and cast herself into the dark water below. Some versions of the legend say she tied heavy stones to her ankles before making the leap, ensuring she would never resurface. Others omit this detail, but all agree that she disappeared beneath the waters of the lake forever.

When the hunter realized what had happened, he raced to save her. He searched the water desperately, but Mamowich was gone. Filled with grief and regret, he eventually left the lake behind.

The loss was equally crushing for Pokahoket. The old chief mourned his daughter deeply and spent his remaining days longing for her return. Not long afterward, he too passed away, his heart broken by the tragedy. To this day, local folklore claims that on quiet evenings, his spirit still lingers near the island and its rocky shores.

Like many legends, the tale has changed over the years. Some versions replace the French hunter with a young brave who leaves by canoe, promising to return to the chief's daughter. When he never comes back, (whether lost in a storm, killed in battle, or claimed by the wilderness) the young woman, overcome by despair, throws herself into the lake. Though the details differ, the central theme remains the same.

Whether based on actual events or shaped through generations of storytelling, the legend remains one of Granite Lake's most enduring traditions. It is a story that adds mystery to an already beautiful landscape and continues to capture the imagination of those who visit its peaceful waters.

Some places become more than businesses. They become part of the landscape of our lives. For more than 74 years, Nick’s Restaurant in West Swanzey, New Hampshire, was one of those places for the Monadnock Region. Families gathered there for seafood dinners, travelers stopped on their way through town, and generations of locals grew up recognizing “Buster the Crab,” the giant inflatable crab perched on the roof watching over everyone who passed by and walked through the doors.

When Nick’s closed in 2019, it marked the end of an era for one of the region’s most recognizable roadside restaurants. Yet even today, the building still stands vacant and listed for sale, almost frozen in time. Driving by, it is easy to picture the parking lot full once again, the lights glowing inside, and customers coming and going beneath the watchful eyes of Buster the Crab.

This aerial view is more than a photograph of an old restaurant. It is a reminder of how deeply places like Nick’s become woven into the memories of a community, and how their stories continue long after the doors close.

The Keene Middle School on Maple Avenue in Keene, New Hampshire serves the surrounding community, featuring updated classrooms, athletic facilities, arts programs, and outdoor learning spaces near Tenant Swamp. During construction of the new campus (2009-2011), archaeologists uncovered Native American artifacts and burial sites on the property, revealing that the land had been used by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years before European settlement. The discoveries included tools, cultural artifacts, and evidence of ancient settlements connected to Abenaki and earlier Native communities who lived throughout the Monadnock region because of the area’s wetlands, wildlife, and waterways.

Today, the school grounds represent both modern education and an important piece of New Hampshire’s Indigenous history. Parts of the surrounding landscape were preserved through outdoor classroom and boardwalk areas, helping students and visitors learn about the natural environment and the deep cultural history beneath the campus.
