Lindy’s Diner first arrived in Keene, New Hampshire in 1961 when the Chacklos family purchased a Paramount Diner built in Haledon, New Jersey, and transported it to Gilbo Avenue. Many longtime residents still remember watching the gleaming stainless steel diner arrive on a flatbed truck before being carefully lifted into place.
Since then, generations of locals, college students, travelers, and even politicians have filled its booths for breakfast and lunch. The classic New Jersey-style diner has become one of Keene’s most recognizable landmarks, known for its vintage exterior, counter seating, and tabletop jukeboxes that continue to preserve the feeling of a bygone era. Over the decades, countless presidential candidates and elected officials have stopped in during campaign visits, adding another chapter to the diner’s colorful history.
While Keene over the years has changed around it, Lindy’s Diner remains a reminder of a simpler time when diners served as gathering places where neighbors met for coffee, stories were shared across the counter, and everyone seemed to know someone sitting a few stools away. More than six decades after opening its doors, the familiar sight of Lindy’s continues to welcome customers downtown, serving not just meals, but memories.
In the weeks to come, the Lindy’s Diner sign is set to be removed, restored, and reinstalled by Precision Sign Installation Inc. I am looking forward to working alongside them, documenting the process that will bring it back to life with a refreshed glow for future generations to enjoy.
