Located in Puyallup, Washington, Bigfoot Pipe & Piling operates a 12-acre storage and fabrication yard. The company’s impressive inventory offers steel pipes ranging from 1/4 inch to 10 feet in diameter for projects in construction, marine applications and infrastructure.

The yard recently changed hands, and the parent company sought to get updated marketing photography and video of their new location. They wanted us to capture not only the yard’s daily operations and the team behind it, but also their playful side. Their manager, embracing the humor, suited up in a Bigfoot costume and, despite the summer heat, walked, climbed, and posed around the yard. I wish more companies would incorporate humor into their marketing efforts.

Rippe Associates, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, designs commercial kitchens for clients in hospitality, healthcare and education. They worked on the food hall, called The Kitchen, at Quil Ceda Creek Casino, part of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington resort complex in Tulalip, Washington.

After the project was completed, they needed front and back-of-house photos and reached out to me for this photography project. I met the Rippe project manager, who was overseeing the renovations, at the casino at 6 am, so we could start the shoot before the dining area became busy with guests.

The photos were used for marketing, and were featured in several publications, including the Foodservice Equipment & Supplies Magazine and Casino Style Magazine.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to photograph one of Tacoma’s treasured religious sites—Temple Beth El. This synagogue, founded in 1960 from the merger of two congregations (Temple Beth Israel and Sinai Temple), has been a beacon of Jewish life in Pierce County ever since. Its current building, located in the West End of Tacoma, was dedicated in 1968 and is a striking example of modern architecture that blends Northwest regional design with religious symbolism....

We partnered with Avara Construction, a Redmond, Washington based company, to capture marketing photos of their ongoing projects around Seattle. They wanted us to showcase the dynamic nature and excitement at their construction sites, the skill and experience of their crew and what it takes to build new facilities and remodel the existing ones.

This home feeds the homeowners’ passions: boating, family time, and entertaining. When plans began, the design was traditional but, “the more we looked at the site and the possible views, the more the design transitioned and evolved. We angled the house in a soft arc which maximizes views of the...

First, an aside.

My switch to photography was gradual. It was the summer of 2000 and I was working on a fisheries research project on Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. I had a small point-and-shoot film camera. After dropping it a few times, the door latch broke. Layers of green duct tape kept the door shut. To change a roll of film, I would peel the tape and retape the door afterwards. Every shot had to be carefully considered as replacing film was no quick matter. After the project was over, I advantured for a month, photographing the animals I had encountered...

We feel lucky to get to work on such a wide variety of projects. This is what makes commercial photography interesting – every project is an adventure.

We are one of the first to see completed hotels, schools and hospitals. We come to capture the feel and spirit of these buildings when the paint is still fresh and grass is barely poking through the ground. We capture them for the architects, the construction and engineering companies and those who will be using these spaces.

So it was no surprise when we received a phone call from an innovative water chemical company. CH2O creates solutions in water treatments for various industries and agriculture.

They wanted to showcase their laboratory and the manufacturing facility in Tumwater, Washington. The idea was to show the company’s pioneering spirit and the people and tools that make their work possible. Here is a sampling of photos from this shoot.
