Award Alert!

Thrilled to share that this photograph won First Place in the Architecture division of the annual APA Awards.

I made the image at historic Union Station in Washington, DC, during an assignment to promote retail leasing and visitor engagement with this beautiful transportation hub. It’s part of my Coming & Going series, which captures the rhythm of dynamic places by layering authentic moments over time within a composed view—showing how people naturally move through and activate a place, all within a single image.

Many thanks to American Photographic Artists and the jurors for recognizing my work, and congratulations to all the photographers honored this year. You can see the winning images, spanning a wide range of photographic genres, on the APA website.

A fun full-circle story behind this award:

In 2013, at a pivotal time when I was becoming more intentional about architectural photography, I took a weeklong seminar with the great architectural photographer Tim Griffith at the Palm Springs Photographic Workshops.

Like many photographers, I was already blending exposures to manage the range of light in a scene. But Tim’s demonstrations of blending exposures to manage authentic content and distractions within a composition gave me an “ah-ha” moment. It opened up a different way of thinking about how multiple exposures could be used to tell the story of a place.

That idea stayed with me and became one of the primary influences behind my Coming & Going work, where I use parts of multiple moments captured over time to convey the movement, activity and life of a place within a single photograph.

Thirteen years later, this winning Union Station image feels like a pretty wonderful continuation of that lesson.

And the full-circle part? Tim, who has won this competition before, received Second Place in Architecture this year.

Tim is an extraordinary photographer and a great teacher. I hope he’ll share this First Place award with me as a little recognition of his teaching ability—even if it took 13 years for what he taught me to fully sink in!
