Anteater (Ben Gmetro, Leia Hohenfeld, Kurt Curtis) usually play as a keyboard trio. But when they found out Roger Davies would be providing liquid light art at this show, they recruited Jeff on guitar, Ben got behind the kit, Kurt picked up his bass, and the four performed a delightful psychedelic exploration.

Brian Wilson was a huge influence on many artists and friends I love. I have fond childhood memories of my Dad playing The Beach Boys on car rides.

This photo I took of Brian was from the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds in 2017; he was 75 years old. Although he was having a rough time (canceled shows, rumors of stroke and cognitive decline) not many artists get to experience that kind of professional longevity.

He sat behind a piano he wasn't playing and rarely sung a note, but this look on his face as he watched me contort myself up and around a stage full of hardware and monitors shows he was still observing. Rest in peace, Brian, and peace to all who are hurting.

There were so many awesome bands on the Exit Stencil Recordings label. It's sad to see them go. Nothing gold can stay, Ponyboy. This wake is an epic event full of seldom-seen friends and unexpected reunions. Since I had to miss the Davenport Spot farewell, I hope everyone will be here.

And even though I photographed almost every band ever signed to this label, this one of Jovana from Hotchacha holds a special place in my heart. Fun memories.

Do you love a fun concept band like I do? Meet another of this year's Lottery League bands I had a blast photographing. This is I Want My Arby's: Mike, Pete, Ann & Jason. They'll give you a Big Show late-night snack at 11pm from the Jack Daniel's Stage on Saturday June 8 at Ingenuity.

I was inspired by Robert Darkmatter 's fantastic coat and wanted to photograph him enveloped in the fur. I lit his face with a gelled light camera right, while also using a second gelled light camera left for flavor. Manual exposure: 115mm, f/4, 1/320sec, iso 500.

Bob's Lottery League band Gone takes the Jack Daniel's stage at 10:15pm for The Big Show on June 8 at Ingenuity.

I had the great pleasure of creating some band photos for this year’s Lottery League draft, where 172 musicians got drafted into 43 new bands with people they've never worked with before.

Pictured here is Type Three Fun: Alisha (vocals, guitar), Jayce (keyboard, sampler), Luke (drums) and Matt Erie Guitar Company (guitar). Their songs explore a darker theme of "the psychological concept of the shadow self in an uptempo, psychedelic way” which they juxtapose with a bright colorful wardrobe.

They won the "picked last" prize at slot selection, and will open the Panza stage at 1pm Saturday June 8 for The Big Show at Ingenuity.

🎻🎶 Cameras are limited in what they can capture, especially at a concert. So although I set up my cameras very carefully and use many features to work under these difficult conditions, much of the real artistry comes later in the editing process.

Most of the time, when you look at my photos, you're seeing a new reality I spent hours creating. It's often not what the scene actually looked like. Or at least there are always ways I can improve it. Concert lighting usually looks pretty unflattering. But usually I can change the raw data into something that looks decent.

The stage lighting for this shot was particularly bad. Among many other edits, I also used hues of purple and yellow to highlight Ethan and his violin. 🎵✨

Who remembers the Save The Music Foundation nonprofit? -- As in VH1's Save The Music, back in the day. Are you aware they're still going? It's true. A couple months ago, they found my photography website, loved my work, and hired me to help them further their mission in this area. We had a fantastic time visiting Akron Public Schools music classes, where I got to photograph young kids learning to play ukulele, recorder and xylophone. Not only are they the absolute cutest kids, they're growing stronger through music. What a wonderful organization! I've been thrilled to be a small part of such an important mission here today. Hoping it's only the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

📸🎸 It's so awesome freezing the split-second moment a guitarist's fingers stretch for a difficult chord. It just looks cool. Especially when their facial expression matches. It's rare, it's easy to miss, and it helps make an impactful image. 🤘

📸🥁 Drummers are the heartbeat of the band, yet so often ignored in photography. The most skilled music photographers agree that drummers are often the most challenging to photograph.

It's super technical, you rarely have a decent angle, there's hardware everywhere, and at least a dozen different things need to all align in the same fraction of a second for the image to not be complete rubbish. Plus you need special gear. This applies to all concert photography, and really all photography in general, but exponentially more for drummers.🔥

That's why so many photographers don't successfully capture the drummer. And it's why I've worked so hard at it. I took this image at Friday's most recent Boardman Orchestra Project Mayhem. As always, it was a good time.
