The sun rises early here… and slowly.
The night sky reveals color long before birdsong. When the chickadees awaken, the tide follows, pooling in the dunes and reflecting dawn’s color.
The wind in the pines is ever-present in Wellfleet, unyielding like the scent of sea. Just a dog’s walk away, oysters reach adulthood and farmers claim them. Tides rise, tides fall, years pass…
There is a rare peace here. A delicate peace. My friends Adam and James (and Stuart and Louie) know this peace intimately. They have an unique bond with the Cape, and they’ve conserved an oyster’s pearl that may not exist without their influence.
This home was another family’s dream a generation ago. As time passed, decay began to set in. Nature asserted her claim, wood began to rot, and Adam and James arrived as this home was supported only by the glass of its quarter-moon windows.
James, Adam and their friend and architect Ezra Block gave this home a new life. They underwent a complete restoration and expansion that not only saved the building from decay, but renewed it completely.
I was fortunate to be welcomed by James and Adam to photograph their home. I arose before dawn and listened to the wind in the pines. I shared oysters with Adam and James (but not Stuart and Louie) as the sun set in Wellfleet. Despite my long hours photographing this home, it didn’t feel like work for a moment. I was proud to play a small part in documenting this home’s revival. And to spend some time with good people (and Stuart and Louie) in a small slice of American paradise.
