I’ve been seeing a lot of art recently featuring little black girls and Black women, specifically dark skin women, taking on the world, protecting and uplifting the black community (Black men specifically), while simultaneously looking flawless and maintaining their own crown. While that type of art can be inspiring and motivating, living up to that standard is IMPOSSIBLE.

I recently watched a video by where she talks about how the word STRONG when applied to Black women is not a compliment. It’s the type of video that raises your hackles until you actually start listening to what she’s saying. People often gloss over the fact that Black women are often FORCED to be STRONG.

Yes, I need strength to handle the USA as a Black woman but I also need the PROTECTION of my community. I need the space to be vulnerable, to be soft, to CRY, and to ask for HELP when I need it. There are too many Black women who aren’t offered that luxury. Even the MEDICAL community seems to STILL be under the false impression that we’re somehow superhuman. That we don’t feel pain like everyone else.

I understand that that as Black women being strong to superhuman levels is basically our only POSITIVE stereotype. But like many stereotypes, this one needs to be BROKEN too.
