June 22 2026 - Meet Marcie Grzywacz, who is running for Michigan State Senate, District 4, which includes parts of Taylor south of Goddard Road. Marcie is a proud Wayne County native who learned the values of faith, hard work and resilience from her parents -- a Vietnam veteran active in the auto industry and a mother who worked long hours in healthcare. After high school and starting a family, Marcie juggled three jobs while pursuing her college education, ultimately earning her nursing degree and dedicating herself to advocating for patients as an ICU nurse. Marcie homeschooled her children for more than a decade and led community-wide eighth-grade homeschool classrooms, where she brought creativity, classical education and compassion into the learning environment. Her commitment to education reflects her passion for empowering the next generation and building strong, confident learners. She desires to serve working families with real, hands-on leadership, experience and a servant’s heart. Deeply involved in Rockwood, Marcie serves her neighbors as Mayor Pro Tem and has helped launch local initiatives like a city Beautification Committee while acting as a liaison to the Rockwood Housing Commission. She focuses on making Rockwood a thriving, family‑centered community, grounded in listening to residents, building relationships, and taking principled action on their behalf. Outside of work and public service, Marcie is a wife and mother in a faith‑filled, working‑class family, married to a proud union member and stepmom to a wonderful daughter. Her life experience—overcoming challenges, raising children, working in critical care, and serving locally—drives her dedication to standing alongside families across Downriver and Western Wayne County. June 18 2026 – Taylor resident Rick Roy rests on a park bench as he talks about his daily objectives: to get out of bed, travel to Heritage Park and enjoy the beauty that comes with it. Rick has made it a point to enjoy the simple things of life since he was diagnosed three years ago with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, known medically as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease. Rick is taking his fate in life surprisingly well. Before his diagnosis, he exercised, enjoyed bicycling and later walking, specifically around Taylor and his favorite park. These days, he rests comfortably on the bench and enjoys the view, chatting with familiar passersby. “I love being out,” he said. “I love watching the geese and ducks and nature.” Rick was 2 years old when he moved with his family to Taylor in 1956, buying a brand new house at the time. As a youth, he attended Clarence Randall Elementary School and graduated from Kennedy High in 1972. He later bought his own Taylor house not far from his parents during a 30-year career at Ford Motor Co. “I’m glad I got out young,” he said. He enjoyed good health until ALS. He has done lots of research on the terminal disease and knows all about Lou Gehrig, the baseball Hall of Famer who died from ALS two years after his emotional 1939 speech to New York Yankees fans about his life that included “I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” At the time, Gehrig expressed profound gratitude for his career, teammates and fans, highlighting his humility and resilience. The disease was soon named in his honor. Rick said some people live 10 years with ALS, but he is realistic about the rest of his life, however long that is. He is grateful to chat with people he sees at the park and for any prayers he receives. See you again soon!
