Male and female monarchs in the milkweed! Not easy catching them chasing each other in flight but worth the wait. You can tell the top one is a male from its thin veins and black scent spot, while the female has thicker veins and no spot. The purpose of the spot is to release pheromones as they flap their wings to attract a mate. Can you tell in the other pictures if it’s male or female?

Have you heard the thought experiment where people are asked to count red cars on the highway?

They tally them excitedly, celebrating each one as red cars seem to appear everywhere. At the end, they’re asked how many blue cars they saw.

They have no idea. They weren’t looking.

This concept is known as the frequency illusion. Once you notice something, you start seeing it everywhere. It’s not that the world has changed, but your attention has.

For me, photography has had that beautiful effect. It helps me appreciate life every day…the details in flowers, bugs, birds, bees, reflections, light, and texture. Small things I used to ignore.

Long story short, here’s a tiny damselfly on a flower.
Picture me lying awkwardly in mulch, trying to stay still.

Nobody does the 4th of July quite like Alpena! Every year it’s fun to see downtown packed for the biggest celebration of the year. Had a great time watching the parade yesterday! This year felt bigger than ever with more floats, more people, and more energy for the 250th! 🇺🇸

My journey with photography started around the age of 14 with a GoPro, filming my brother kiteboarding in our backyard on Lake Huron. 17 years later and he’s still one of my favorite subjects! Finally had a rainy morning to go through all the pictures from our Florida trip a couple weeks ago, had a fun light wind day at Sanibel. If there’s a puff of wind he’ll be out there 🤙 always the best time when we’re together Blake
