My very first sporting event that I photographed was in the fall of 1995 while taking my photojournalism class. I grabbed a roll of film from Walmart and shot the EIU soccer game. I took the film to the Daily Eastern News and told their photo editors that I hadn’t seen anyone there and if there was something usable they could run it and I’d love to contribute. That’s how I got my start in photography.

I’ve played soccer and watched even more. There are images I haven’t made on a list in my head and the “header shot” has been one of them. For over 30 years, I’ve beem trying to get this shot - clean faces, emotional faces, ball at a head - and it’s been a bane of existence until last night.

When I saw Rece and Brady line up for the set piece towering over the Bulldog defense, I salivated as if someone had set a rare ribeye and cheesecake in front of me. I prayed “Dear Baby Jesus, hear my pleading from your humble servant…”

The lighting in that part of the field on both sides is not the best, but compositionally I couldn’t have asked for a better image.

Thank you Rece and Brady for your hard work and all you do. I finally got *THAT* image. It might not be a Pulitzer l, it might not be an award-winning life altering image, but it means the world to me. Without yall, Id still be at it trying to get that image. Thanks guys and best of luck the rest of the season.

Effingham hosted St. Anthony in a heat-delayed match Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs scored an early goal taking it to the Hearts before Effingham countered with pressure the rest of the evening tallying an insurmountable lead for the win.

(Also: big props to the P.A. guy for the Dr. Who theme song during introductions. You sir, have gained a fan.)

Rustic vibes for Lickin' My Chicken & Pullin' My Pork BBQ and Day 1 is in the books!

The Po’ Boy is my fav - it’s a mix of sensations for your taste buds - a little crunchy; a little softness; a tad bit of sweetness; and it all comes together with a bit of heat at the end. If you’re looking for something different with a bbq vibe, that’s your go-to!

Big thanks to Drew for having me back again and to Nick and the staff for being super easy to work with.

I was talking to Erin Henderson Hartke today and she shared one of the very first images I made of her daughter, Mia. We were at Tuscan Hills Winery for Jamie Stang Ellis’ engagement party.

Mia is wearing a polka dotted sundress holding a beach ball with a little white flower tucked up above her right ear. She’s got her little tongue poking out like she’s licking icing. She's all of like 10-months-old.

I didn’t know Mia or her parents at that point, but in the decade or so since we’ve become practically family (along with young master Andrew who was soon on his way).

I looked at the photo she shared and realized that all those years have moved so fast.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d be here telling the story of “Amelia” becoming “Mia” and realizing just how important that is. I just wanted to be a pro sports photographer. Telling the stories of regular 9-to-5 people became more important.

When Erin txtd me a few weeks back about celebrating Mia’s 13th birthday with a softball uniform photo shoot - she said she just wanted something simple. My brain had other ideas. My brain had a crown and a softball. But not just any softball.

Thank you to Holli at Holli's Flour Shop for seeing what I had envisioned. I’ve done most of these poses with a real softball. I wanted a cake softball because this was important; this was special. This was a chapter of a story worth telling.

Happy belated 13th birthday Mia! Good luck on 8th grade night!

SNEAK PEEK:

We got our guy Jakob Gurgel away from sports for a few hours today to start his senior story - but we always seem to circle back!

With the MLB Field of Dreams game just behind us, I wanted to do something that was still fresh with it in our minds but with a twist. The Stew-Stras senior’s backyard is a corn field so it was just a matter of picking the right corn(1 ear of corn was damaged in the making of this image 🌽🚨).

Jakob has a veritable collection of sports jerseys that we absolutely had to highlight so we borrowed the backstop at Trinity Lutheran to hang them up.

Mix in the cool shades and we have a great start to his story.

He’s been a regular client here for several years but - officially - welcome to the Piotrowski Studios family, Jakob.

LETS GOOOOOOOOO!!!

EDIT: FB darkened the images in the reel. The true colors can be seen on the reel at Piotrowski Studios on Instagram.
