Popping in quickly to wish everyone a happy new year and confirm that I still exist and take photos of flowers and creatures. I took my toddler to the garden every week from early spring to late fall, and have managed a few winter trips, too (but mostly to see the train show lol). I feel especially proud of the photos I took while wrangling him with one arm for safety reasons. Special thanks to family and friends who joined on many occasions, and to whomever left seeds on our favorite paths just before our arrival almost every week. We had some magical Disneyesque moments with the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. E knows all their names and wants the ones who migrated to come back from 47567893rd Street already, wherever that is. Our adventures have kept me sane in an insane world.

I don't even know what to say anymore. I'm brokenhearted for the Bibas family, the youngest of which, Kfir, was born just two days apart from my son. It's been impossible for me not to reckon with the fact that if it had been us, there are people I've known for decades who would say nothing, mitigate, justify, or even celebrate it as "resistance" and "freedom fighting." Just as mangled women's bodies were paraded around Gaza on October 7th, the boys' remains were paraded in coffins yesterday to crowds cheering while upbeat music played in the background. Parents brought their children to the spectacle and modeled celebrating the deaths of the babies, a body that was supposed to be their mother's (?!), and an 83-year old peace activist. The depravity of Hamas and their supporters, both active and passive, knows no depths. This is why so many of us held onto hope for so long, and why Israelis sang "Hatikva" ("The Hope") through their tears even as the bodies were being brought in for forensic testing. In a world that is actively attempting to erase our history, identities, and humanity, we will need much more than hope to move forward, but it's essential nonetheless. 🧑

First time taking flower photos with my toddler in tow... not my full camera setup but we'll get there. Swipe to see some lovely camellias, and my baby being remarkably gentle with them. πŸ«£πŸ˜…πŸ₯ΉπŸ’—

I have been very quiet here, but I need to say this so that it leaves my body. The Holocaust is not your talking point. Logging into this app in the hopes of seeing some beauty, supporting my friends, or laughing at a funny meme, but instead having my people's greatest trauma bandied about as comparable to anything and everything is beyond exhausting. Some of you tolerate sneaky comparisons--the ones that use Holocaust-adjacent terminology. It seems everything under the sun is "just like N**i Germany"... except the rampant antisemitism that defined it and was the root cause of the Holocaust. How do you take yourselves seriously? How do you pull quotes from Anne Frank's diary to talk about every issue but antisemitism? You want the weight of the Holocaust without any of the baggage, all for what, some extra likes? If you want more people to care about an issue you care about, show it for what it is rather than what you think it's like. Leave Anne alone. Leave all of us alone. Be consistent in your silence.
