It doesn’t matter what time of year you schedule your session, if you’re going outdoors, there’s always a chance Mother Nature’s going to throw you a curve ball.
Upon getting in my car to head to this session, it had been a beautiful 73° in Thousand Oaks. At the beach however, totally different story. We’re talking gale force winds.
The type of wind where you have to yell to be heard when more than 6 feet apart - making it a challenge when you’re guiding clients from a distance to get the scenery and view. Winds that whip your cheeks and your hair and make you squint to protect your eyes from flying debris.
As a parent, you know that navigating a session under these conditions without a toddler would be tough, but with a toddler, it could be a recipe for disaster.
However, after acknowledging what we might be up against, mom and dad were still willing to proceed and the resulting images speak for themselves.
As always, mom had selected wardrobe from the client closet. I came with the three dresses for mom to wear but suggested we stick with one to keep spirits high and reduce stress. I suggested the dress with a slit as it would allow for movement with the wind and possibly give us that flowing look I have to work so hard for when in studio.
We lasted just under 45 minutes in the whipping wind and walked back to the car thrilled with what we were able to create! And even though dad doesn’t love taking photos, we had built such a great rapport during their son’s newborn, six month, and one year photo sessions, that he was laughing and smiling the whole time in spite of the conditions.
