For the last few weeks, I’ve been a little quiet here.

On June 23rd, my mom passed away. And it really shook me.

We knew this day would come after she made the decision in February to stop treatment for her metastatic breast cancer. But knowing it was coming didn’t make it any easier. It hit harder than I expected.

Since then, it’s been a few weeks of grief, gratitude, and reflection. And as my sister and I have gone through photographs, j keep coming back to this portrait.

I photographed my mom in 2017 while I was building my beauty and branding portfolio. At the time, I simply needed someone willing to step in front of my camera. And of course, when I asked my mom, she immediately said yes to something that would help me out.

Today, this portrait has become one of my most treasured memories. When I look at it, I don’t just see a beautiful photograph. I see the woman who believed in me before so many others did.

She encouraged me when I started Alyson Berg Photography, cared for Payton so I could photograph clients and attend networking meetings, and proudly told anyone who would listen about my work.

The older I get, the more I know that the work I do isn’t just about pretty pictures. It’s about honoring remarkable women, like my mom, who may or may not be good about celebrating themselves.

I’m so grateful I have this portrait, because it reminds me every day of the remarkable woman who shaped my life.

Her birthday would have been August 6th.

To celebrate her life and continue the legacy she inspired, I’m opening 12 portrait experiences at a special birthday rate. My hope is to give 12 women the opportunity to see themselves with the same love and significance my mom saw in everyone else.

One day they’re a tiny bundle asleep in your arms. Then they’re a sticky hand reaching for yours as you cross the street. Before you know it, they’re wrapping you in a bear hug before walking across the stage in a cap and gown.

Motherhood is a collection of moments that feels endless while you’re living them and impossibly brief when you look back. And we always think we’ll remember it all. The late night feedings, sleepy cuddles, first steps, missing teeth, school drop-offs, and last first days.

But time has a way of quietly slipping through our fingers.

It doesn’t matter what time of year you schedule your session, if you’re going outdoors, there’s always a chance Mother Nature’s going to throw you a curve ball.

Upon getting in my car to head to this session, it had been a beautiful 73° in Thousand Oaks. At the beach however, totally different story. We’re talking gale force winds.
The type of wind where you have to yell to be heard when more than 6 feet apart - making it a challenge when you’re guiding clients from a distance to get the scenery and view. Winds that whip your cheeks and your hair and make you squint to protect your eyes from flying debris.
As a parent, you know that navigating a session under these conditions without a toddler would be tough, but with a toddler, it could be a recipe for disaster.

However, after acknowledging what we might be up against, mom and dad were still willing to proceed and the resulting images speak for themselves.

As always, mom had selected wardrobe from the client closet. I came with the three dresses for mom to wear but suggested we stick with one to keep spirits high and reduce stress. I suggested the dress with a slit as it would allow for movement with the wind and possibly give us that flowing look I have to work so hard for when in studio.

We lasted just under 45 minutes in the whipping wind and walked back to the car thrilled with what we were able to create! And even though dad doesn’t love taking photos, we had built such a great rapport during their son’s newborn, six month, and one year photo sessions, that he was laughing and smiling the whole time in spite of the conditions.
