I have a big announcement that hasn’t gone public until now! I’m opening my own personal gallery on the ranch at Green Mountain Red Angus with some new never before seen prints, like this one here… dates soon to come!!

A few weeks back we had 2 groups of pairs mix together and we needed to bring them in to the corrals to separate them. Knowing we were going to use horses I brought my photo equipment along, minus one important little thing… my primary camera. The one that’s compatible with all of my lenses I brought with. Luckily my backup camera was in the case I always take with me but I only had one lens for it, a fixed 85mm lens. For those of you who don’t know the lingo, that means it doesn’t zoom. That means my ability to compose a shot the way I want is limited. In the end it was a great exercise for my creativity, one I would have never taken otherwise if I had other options, but that’s the beauty of it. It forced me to work creative muscles that needed a little dusting off.

Passing through the Northern Arizona landscape last April I knew I had to make sure I had time to stop and photograph some of the country. The one thing no image can recreate is how colossal these cliffs really are, definitely one drive I won’t soon be forgetting.

This shoot for AQHA was supposed to show western fashion. Leann was with her husband Hadley and their dynamic was the star of the evening along with their choices of fashion but, all that being said, this was one of my favorite photographs from my time spent with them. Just Leanne, her horse, a tipi and a fire. I shot this photo a little underexposed and gave the landscape some room to breathe with a wider shot because it’s what seemed to fit this mood the best. I think what drew me to this image the most is it just felt old school. The scene felt like it was from another time. It didn’t necessarily follow the rules of our objective, but it simply felt right. Most of the time I shoot while being conscientious of what is expected, but once I feel like I have all that I need, I then shoot for me and go with what seems to strike me the most. It took me a while to realize I could have that creative flexibility once I feel like I’ve done my job, but I’m glad I finally learned that lesson. Without it images like this would not exist.

Proud to be able to say I worked with AQHA this last October and even had an image from this shoot featured in their next printing of their Journal! This wouldn't be possible without my friend Chris and AQHA’s Art Director Tim. l'll be forever grateful for them allowing myself and a select group of other photographers to work alongside them, the lessons learned during that retreat are irreplaceable!
