Did you know wildlife management exemption gives you the same property tax break as an agricultural or timber exemption? This time of year, you will see antlers starting to grow on white-tailed deer bucks. Often mistakenly called “horns”, they actually fall off every year, making them “antlers”. Growing antlers are actually bone covered in skin that have blood coursing through them during growth. Protein is of utmost importance in a buck’s diet this time of year as it is utilized for antler growth. Once the antlers are fully grown, the bucks will begin rubbing them on small trees to remove the “velvet” material. This leaves a hardened, sharp bone used for fighting other bucks and making scrapes during the rut. The antler is made up of collagen and various minerals such as calcium phosphate that give it its hardness.

Wildlife tax exemptions give landowners the ability to manage their land the way they want while saving the same on taxes as a timber or ag exemption. Songbirds, squirrels, white-tailed deer, ducks, and turkeys are just a few of the species you can manage for on your property. You also don’t have to stick to a timber management plan or practice agriculture to keep the exemption.
