📸Brown Pelican
One of my favorite birds on the planet… pelicans 🥹
💜Brown pelicans are the smallest of the 8 extant pelican species. With a 6’ average wingspan, you’ll find these birds along both US coasts as well as ranging down into Central & South America.
💜Brown pelicans do occasionally venture inland but are known for living and nesting near coastlines as that’s where they hunt. You’ll find brown pelicans cruising over the ocean waves and then abruptly diving down into the surf to sn**ch a fish or two. They aren’t diving deep— maybe 3’ max— but they still manage to fill their bellies because of their quick dives and large gular pouch they can scoop fish up in. Yum. 🐟
💜One of the biggest threats to brown pelican populations is littering. Whether it be trash they swallow believing it might be food, polluted fish they eat, or hooks and fishing lines they get caught up in/swallow, brown pelicans are one of the most popular shorebirds to end up in wildlife rehabs across the state of Florida alone. They are incredible birds and seeing them should serve as a stark reminder to keep our beaches clean. Whether that means just the simplest goal of packing out what you pack in or going the extra mile to pick up trash left by others is for you to decide.

📸Glossy Ibis
🖤Glossy ibis are far more eye-catching to everyday people than their cousins the white ibis. Glossies are just another one of the 28 extant species of ibis you will find worldwide. With semi-worldwide distribution (on every continent except Antarctica)
🖤Ibis are very interesting birds. Distinguishable by their comedically long, curved beaks, they are specialized wading birds known for their presence near coastlines, in brackish water, and even in freshwater lakes. They will wade through the shallows skimming their beaks back and forth until they find a little snack to grab.
🖤How are they locating said snack? Well, they use more than their eyes. Glossy ibis have specialized sensory receptors in their beaks that allow them to feel pressure changes, movement, and even current through their beaks to better locate prey and to know exactly when to snap up their dinner. 🐸🦎🐟

📸Photos From My Grandfather🌳
🦋My Grandfather, Charles H Crass, passed away just a little over 5 years ago. As a WWII veteran who lived through countless wars as well as the great depression, he was a quiet man who seldom spoke about his emotions until his later years. He was a kind, gentle man who loved animals, found peace in gardening, and loved his family more than anything. He lived to be just short of 102 years old and I was blessed to have him in my life until I was almost 21.
🦋My Pops loved photography. He brought his film camera on every family vacation, to every day at the park, every holiday, and every trip he and my Grandma went on. He never spoke about it, but we all knew he had a deep love for art that came out in his photographs.
🦋I decided now would be a great time to share some of his photos not only here, but also for sale at . If you visit the shop you can purchase any of these photos as prints if you’d like a piece of art that might take you back to a simpler time before digital photography, smart phones, and the internet complicated the simple act of enjoying the world around us.

📸African Savanna Elephant: Tsavo
An old photo of my favorite boy whom I miss seeing everyday 🫶🏻
🐘Elephants are amongst the smartest animals on the planet. With brains that weigh 10-12 pounds, they have the largest brains of any land animal. This is a big part of why elephants have the longest gestational period of any animal— 22 months! It takes a long time to grow a brain that can mature to weigh 12 pounds.
🐘When it comes to brain power, elephants easily have us beat. While we have roughly 86 billion neurons inside our 3-pound brains, elephants have 257 billion in their 10-12 pound brains. Although they have fewer neurons in their cerebral cortex than we do, much of their brain power is located in the locomotion hub of the brain: the cerebellum. About 97% of their overall neurons are located in their cerebellums according to an NIH study. This makes a lot of sense when you take into account not only the sheer size of elephants, but also the incredible strength and dexterity in their trunks alone.

I Copy Your Moon Joy 🛰️
I took this photo back in 2023 with my old camera. I’d just gotten my big fancy lens (my Sigma 150-600) a few months prior and was so excited to be able to take a photo of the moon. This phase of the moon— waxing gibbous— is probably my favorite… and that’s actually why I got a moon tattoo with this exact photo as the reference.
🌔Waxing gibbous is the phase between the first quarter moon and the full moon. Illuminated by the setting sun’s lingering rays at an indirect angle, the details of craters are easier to see and photograph.
🌔The word gibbous
🌔Did you know? Why does the moon appear orange? The answer is atmospheric scattering. Also known as Rayleigh scattering, this is the way light scatters when it hits particles (like air molecules) which are much smaller than the light’s wavelength. It more significantly affects shorter blue wavelengths, which is why the sky looks blue and sunsets look red. Basically, blue scatters more so it reaches our eyes and the sky looks blue! And, in this case, orange and red have longer wavelengths so they pass through and don’t scatter as easily. This, paired with a thicker atmosphere the moon’s reflected light is traveling through to get to our eyes, can be why the moon might appear orange when it’s low on the horizon.
🌔Pollutants like smoke from wildfires, volcanic ash, and atmospheric pollution can also explain why the moon might appear orange once it is high in the sky.

Okapi: Elijah
An oldie from this boy’s pr***en phase 🫶🏻
🖤Okapi are naturally silent and reclusive animals. They rarely make audible noises, instead communicating with other okapi using infrasonic vocalizations. These are sounds outside of a human being’s audible range. Infrasound makes it easier and safer for prey animals like okapi and many others to communicate over farther distances and potentially without being overheard by predators in the area.

Throwback to January when Makaio was in K2 and just kept doing swim bys to see his adoring fans 🥹 I was so happy to see and hear him up close and personal.
🖤Orcas make a variety of sounds just as other cetaceans do. These sounds come from their blowhole rather than their mouths and can be used both for communication as well as underwater sonar. Sound bounces off their surroundings and then comes back, letting the orca gather information about their surroundings and orient themselves within their habitat.

📸Black Vulture
This vulture is a baby and I loved seeing them 🥹
🖤Juvenile black vultures are distinguishable by their turtlenecks, aka the feathers extending up their neck and to the base of their skull rather than them sporting the bare-necked appearance of adult black vultures. In juveniles this is a carryover from hatchling and fledging vultures needing protection and warmth and not yet needing bare heads and necks to prevent bacteria from gathering in their feathers.

📸Harbor Seal: London (?)
🦭Harbor Seals are found off both coasts of the US as well as going as far north as Alaska on the Pacific side and Greenland on the Atlantic. They are also found off the coast of Europe and Asia and are known to not often migrate from their natal beaches. They will travel up to or a bit over 1,000 miles to find food or a mate, but they typically end up right back where they started.
🦭Did you know? Harbor seals can dive up to 1600 ft and hold their breath for 30 minutes!

📸Orca
The alien is probably one of if not my favorite breaches the pod does. Aliens and kickers are both so cool to see. And the slideover. Anyways…
🖤Orcas are capable of bringing their whole body out of the water for breaches and also occasionally bringing their body up onto a beach or iceberg to grab a fleeing prey item like a seal, sea lion, or penguin.
