What should you wear for a headshot session?

The best thing you can wear is a great smile! That said, you should wear what you think is appropriate for the audience you are wanting to communicate with. Typically, people in finance dress in business formal. Creative types are generally more relaxed and expressive about what they wear. Realtors may want to be either formal or very casual or something in-between. Bold colors or heavy patterns may distract. Textures are always nice. Think about the use of the image; is it for a brochure, business card, etc.? For a typical headshot, you only need to be concerned from the chest-up. For an environmental portrait you want to be ready from head-to-toe.

What facial expressions should you use?
You want to look professional, but that doesn’t mean you can’t crack a smile or even laugh now and then. In fact, we want you use a natural smile! The more variety you have in your expressions, the more choices you will have later. A more serious headshot may be suitable for a formal position, while an image that is a little more casual may look better for a job dealing extensively with the public. Keep it real.

How can I avoid bad retouching?

Retouching is necessary in most portraiture and it is expected in professional photography! Good retouching is what sets your photograph apart! The same way that retouching can make it not look like you, retouching can get you back to your ‘best’ you! Make sure that your photographer does all of their retouching in house, not outsourced. That way you will have the ability to talk with your photographer directly and review your portraits before delivery. Your images should never look fake, blurred, or plastic-like. Your portrait should still look like you, but the best representation of you.

How do you pose for a headshot or portrait?

Your photographer should be there to help you feel relaxed and have fun. Depending on needs, some shots will be from the shoulders up and other may be full body. Your photographer should coach you into a variety of poses and expressions and shoot photos from different angles to make sure you have a lot of great images and options for you to make your selections. They should never just put you in front of the camera and expect you to figure it out; that said, you should certainly have input on what your desires are! This is the customer service you should expect from a professional photographer.
