So… are we starting a podcast? 🎙️

Honestly, I’m not completely sure yet. But what I do know is that we want to do a lot more of these conversations—interviewing people from across the wedding industry and finally talking openly about the topics nobody really discusses.

There is so much psychology behind a wedding day: the emotions, the pressure, the expectations, and all the little things happening behind the scenes.

Our first conversation was with Gitty Hecht, and for this first clip we talked about something really interesting:

When you come out of the makeup room, are you genuinely happy with how you look? Or does it sometimes come down to one more little touch here, another adjustment there—and suddenly you feel so much more confident?

How much is the actual makeup, and how much is the psychology of the day?

Which, by the way, ties right into my last post about first looks. That one definitely stirred up some opinions too. 👀

Now I need your thoughts:

Should we release the full conversation?
Should we keep posting short clips?
Or should we turn this into a real podcast on all the streaming platforms?

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes at a wedding. The vendors, the pressure, the timing, the expectations, and all the little things couples and families may never realize are happening.

Our first conversation was with Gitty Hecht, and we covered a lot of different topics. But this one was definitely one of the hottest:

Are brides spending too much time in the makeup room? Is it cutting into the photographer’s time? And how do you balance everything fairly without making the bride feel rushed?

We recently got ourselves into a little hot water over this topic, so we decided it was worth discussing honestly.

Before everyone calls me an apikores, let’s talk about what may be one of the most controversial wedding topics:

Pre-chuppah photos.

The entire modern day system of spending three or four hours before the wedding taking separate photos—while the chosson and kallah avoid seeing each other—is not some ancient part of Jewish weddings.

Once upon a time, the bride arrived, the groom arrived, there was a badeken, a chuppah, and the wedding continued. The elaborate, multi-hour photography schedule we have today is a relatively modern development.

I have even heard respected roshei yeshivah advocate that, when appropriate and properly supervised, a chosson and kallah should consider taking some photos together before the chuppah.

Why?

Because otherwise, the couple may lose the opportunity to get beautiful, relaxed photos—and hundreds of guests may be left waiting while they take pictures after the chuppah.

Now, as a Lubavitcher, I am obviously not telling anyone to ignore their minhagim. I am also not paskening halachah for anybody.

My point is simply that this may not be as black-and-white as people assume—although black and white may be exactly what the bride and groom are wearing.

There are halachic opinions, community customs, and individual circumstances to consider. If the traditional schedule is going to leave a bride overwhelmed and anxious for the entire day, perhaps there are reasonable alternatives worth discussing with your wedding Rabbi / Rav.

Every couple should speak with their rav, community leaders, and families and decide what is appropriate for them.

But before attacking someone for doing things differently, remember: not every modern wedding custom is automatically halachah, and not every alternative is automatically wrong.

This wedding song has more to do with the Three Weeks than you probably realize.

We sing “Od Yishama” at weddings like it’s just another happy song.

But listen to what we’re actually saying:

“Once again, there will be heard in the cities of Yehudah and the streets of Yerushalayim… the voice of joy, the voice of happiness, the voice of a chosson and the voice of a kallah.”

That is not just music.

That is a promise.

During the Three Weeks, we remember a Yerushalayim that went quiet. A Beis Hamikdash that was destroyed. Streets that once carried life, simcha, korbanos, and kedushah… suddenly filled with silence.

And then, at a wedding, we sing the answer.

Od Yishama.

It will be heard again.

Every Jewish wedding is not just a beautiful night. It is another sound of redemption. Another Jewish home being built. Another step toward the day when Yerushalayim will be full again — with simcha, with holiness, with the voice of chosson and kallah.

So no, Od Yishama is not just a wedding song.

It is a song of Moshiach.

It is our reminder that even in the days when we mourn what was destroyed, we are still building what will be rebuilt.
