💜 MORE THAN A JERSEY💜
September is Su***de Awareness & Prevention Month, and this month always hits me a little harder—especially this year after experiencing the loss of a former student this summer and others to su***de in the past.
As someone who has spent several years working with kids from preschool age through 18, this is something incredibly important to me. But mental health struggles don’t stop when someone turns 18. Adults struggle too. The coach on the sideline, the teacher in the classroom, the parent in the stands, or the friend who always seems okay—you never truly know what someone may be carrying.
As a photographer who specializes in sports, I spend a lot of time around athletes. I photograph the big plays, the mistakes, the wins, the losses and everything in between. But behind every jersey I photograph is a person, and that person will always matter more than their performance.
Before you criticize the kid playing QB, remember—they’re still just a kid. They are worth so much more than one bad play. Before you chew out a coach, remember there’s a person underneath that coaching hat, too. Words hurt, and you never know what someone is already carrying.
So this month, check on your people. Ask twice. Listen. Choose kindness. Remind people that they matter while they’re still here to hear it.
More than a jersey.
More than a stat.
More than a bad play.
More than a game.
More than an athlete.
Having experienced loss to su***de, there are words I wish I could go back and say. If you need to hear them today:
Your hardest moment does not have to be permanent. There is still so much of your story left to live.
Your story isn’t over. Please stay. 💜
If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988.
