Sometimes you search for something and it’s hiding in plain sight. I woke early this morning in hopes of making an image of snow on the mountains over foliage below. I was disappointed to see low cloud cover but thought I might try again at sunset. I was going to go out to a new location but then I saw this scene from… my own backyard. Well actually the second story of my home. Just a dusting of snow on Camels Hump but it made a great combination with the foliage colors. Using a 180-600mm lens, I was able to to compose and compress the scene. I’ll still find a scene with full snow someday, but I’m happy I looked out my window!

We were driving down a dirt road this past weekend heading from a spot where I had just been out shooting when I saw this scene and had to stop. Pull over! What captured me was the contrast of the warm foliage colors in the early light and the cool colors of the barn. I tried to capture that in one frame and added the star burst of sun for interest. Be sure to click on it to see the full frame.

When nature provides the frame…

I had not planned to go out on this holiday day off but the fog over the mountains was too much to resist. So I went out and found myself standing in the middle of a stream enjoying the sound of the water and saturated colors due to the recent rain. Better than working for sure.

I visited this pond a couple nights before this image was made when it was windy and cloudy. I took a few shots and wasn’t pleased with what I saw in the viewfinder but decided I’d come back again. This one was made at sunrise as the sun was just beginning to backlight Mount Mansfield. The pond wasn’t perfectly still when I arrived but soon became glass like. It was peaceful other than the occasional announcement from the geese that were nearby. This fall has been so beautiful.

The foliage colors in the Northeast Kingdom are some of the most spectacular I have ever seen right now. I was out this last weekend trying to capture just a small bit of what is an expansive color palette in the state. These images are some of what I made. The cold start to the morning gave me fog over the water and frost on the grasses nearby in the first two and once it started to warm up, I was able to contrast the cold mist of the pond with the warm colorful foliage on the edge. I have mine ,but which one is your favorite?

With this being an exceptional year in Vermont for fall color, I got out early on 5 hours sleep this morning to make some images. It’s great knowing where your passion is located and being able to go there.

We kicked off the senior portrait season a couple weeks ago with a session for Tanner who will be graduating in 2027 from Essex High School. His family are return customers and I am so pleased with these images to reward them for their faith in me. Sometimes boys are not the most enthused to have senior photos done, but Tanner was great to work with and my job easy. Congrats Tanner!
If you know someone seeking senior photos who has not booked the right photographer, I still have availability so send them my way by heading to my website at: https://rhoaguephotoseniors.myportfolio.com
