Had a Bob Ross happy little accident this morning with this shutter click. I was just about to move on from this spot, the sun was shining on the bottom of the clouds but not enough for a shot. It looked like the morning would be grey. But for a few short moments the clouds broke for some of that glorious morning light.
Hope your weekend closes out as a restorative and relaxing one.

Happy Sunday morning from Montana! Last fall I joined a photography workshop out of Seeley Lake, MT. On our last morning we went up into the hills to catch the morning sun. Not so much sun but clouds, tamarack, quiet, new friends with similar interests. This is an image from that morning.

Worth the 40 minute hike in the dark to watch the sunrise at the Acton Recreation Area north of Billings. The moonset was worth getting up at 4:20 am to get out the door by 5.
May this be a moment of peace for you today.

I've been thinking a lot about this poem by Wendell Berry lately. Especially the "in fear of what my life and my children's lives might be". I carry equal fear for my family and for our collective children in the type of world we are leaving, creating?, destroying? for them. So I'll continue to go out into open and wild places--while we still have them and let go of the "forethought of grief" and let the wind, dirt, sun, plants, stars, water, and animals fill my mind. I'll continue to show up in my little space on this piece of star dust and do what I can on the creating side. I will continue to cheer on those that are doing the same. Thanks for checking in.

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives might be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Took a walk yesterday, 4.5 miles up Lake Fork of Rock Creek, until the snow was too deep to walk. I love the sound of running water in mountain stream. Katrina and I didn't talk much, each lost in our thoughts, the kind that come and go as in a meditation. Stopped on the way out to enjoy the view, listen to the creek.
May your Sunday be a peaceful one--seems like we are desperately short of peace all around.

Made it out last night and this morning, made it a priority after looking at the weather forecast. The first three images are from a cemetery north of Billings a few miles. Just far enough from the highway to make the trucks and trains small. Spent some time sitting in the grass contemplating my shots and my mortality. Seemed like an appropriate place to do that. The last two images are from this morning on Norm's Island at Riverfront Park Billings, MT.
I wasn't ready for the sunrise I witnessed this morning--I attempted in editing to stay true to the colors I saw and the hue cast by the sun on the underside of the clouds. The composition isn't ideal. The moment was over in about 3 minutes. Still, better to be outside and watch the landscape light up than to be inside. Happy post Christmas and pre New Years to you and yours.

Hanging out in Butte, MT today. Crews were out and about all over town putting power lines and poles back up, clearing trees and covering roofs. Expensive wind event.

Here are a few more from Wednesday night 11/12/2025. The show wasn't as intense as Tuesday night. Still, I have a good time standing around in the dark with my camera pointed at the sky.
Hope your Sunday is pretty chill.
