I love golden hour as much as the next photographer, but what do you do when you have to photograph during harsh midday sunlight? A scenario you will be faced with at some point, especially if you're photographing an all-day outdoor event.

Some things that will help make the final images better:

⛱️ Use shade! I'm talking open shade—trees, overhangs, and covered areas.

☀️ Try to position the sun behind your subject to have them backlit. This will help reduce harsh shadows, particularly across the face, and help ensure your subject isn't squinting into the sun.

📷 Expose for the highlights in the picture. This may require you to slightly underexpose the image to avoid blowing out the sky or having bright glares on foreheads.

⚡️ Use fill lighting when possible. This could be a reflector to bounce light back at the subject (helping reduce shadows) or a fill flash to help balance the harsh sunlight.

👥 Shadows matter! Adjust your angle or position to reduce or avoid harsh shadows, or play into them and look for interesting shadow patterns that make the picture more appealing.

🦦 If possible, shoot in RAW format. This gives you greater editing capabilities without compromising image quality.

🔎 Add a lens hood. This will help reduce harsh sunlight flares.

🎞 Get to know your camera and shoot in fully manual mode. You'll want the lowest possible ISO, which for most cameras is 100. (ISO controls your camera's sensitivity to light—higher numbers mean greater sensitivity and more light captured.) Then adjust your other settings accordingly.

Week 21 Photo Challenge- Equine Headshots

We're posting NEXT WEEK'S CHALLENGE early.

In my opinion headshots are typically where you capture a bit more of the horse's personality. But what makes a headhsot image stand out?

🐴you're going to want that zoom lens again (are you beginningto see why my 70-200mm is my main lens?). Wide angle lenses can create distorted portions.
🎠Golden hour is lovely but not always an option. If you have to shoot in harsh mid day sun find shay areas to work in. Light filtering through the trees can give a lovely effect as well. Position the sun behind you
🐴Have a helper aside from the handler. This person is responsible for getting the horse's ears up. They may need to be prepared to do some crazy things if the horse is uninterested in things. Equipthis person with things (these things can literally be anything that gets the horse's attention)like peppermints, small amounts of grain in a bucket, noise makers or sound apps and one of my personalfavorites, a stick horse(P.S. if you want something fun to watch after the fact have someone else video this person).
🎠 Ears and eyes! Once again we want the ears forward while keep the eyse soft and unafraid of whatever craziness is happening to get their ears up
🐴This would be a good time to use aperture priority mode if you aren’t shooting in manual. Use a low f-stop to create that nice soft boca (blurred) background
🎠Try to position yourself at approximately eye level (I know this one can be hard with the bigger horses)

Your turn go try your hand at getting some headhsots! Share them tag us and use
