Apparently photography runs in the family.

While I was taking maternity photos, Emery decided she needed to get in on the action and started taking pictures of Mom herself.

And then Great Grandma started taking pictures of Emery taking pictures of Mom.

At some point I'm pretty sure I was no longer in charge of this session. 😂

I especially love that she's using an original Kodak instant camera. There's just something pretty cool about watching the next generation play photographer with a piece of photography history.

One of my favorite things about family sessions is everything that happens in between the photos we're actually trying to take. And this one was definitely a family affair.

When the dress demands a twirl, you twirl.

We weren't getting perfectly posed portraits out of this girl — and I wouldn't have wanted them anyway.

We danced. We spun. We ran across the bridge. We made faces. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, I got her.

Sometimes it takes a village to get the shot.

And sometimes it takes Great Grandma standing in a field, holding several yards of maternity gown, waiting for me to yell, “THROW IT!” 😂

I had a little extra help behind the scenes during this maternity session. My mom came along and was officially promoted to dress-flipping assistant — and she nailed it.

I love getting the beautiful finished photos, but I also love capturing the ridiculous, funny, completely real moments that happen behind the scenes.

Emery understood the assignment.

I swear, photographing kids is about 10% posing and 90% letting them do their thing and being ready when the magic happens.

And when your subject happens to be your granddaughter...you take approximately 1847 photos because obviously you need every single one.

I haven't even gotten to the rest of her photos yet. Consider yourselves warned. 😂

One day, you'll forget just how perfectly that belly fit beneath your hands.

You'll forget exactly how it felt to stand in the nursery waiting for the little person who would soon be sleeping in that crib.

That's why I love the little details during maternity sessions just as much as the big, beautiful portraits.

Because someday, these won't just be maternity photos.

They'll be memories of who you were while you were waiting to meet them.

Every mama deserves a moment where the focus is completely on her.

I love the drama of this emerald gown, especially surrounded by all that soft window light. And believe it or not, these weren't taken in a studio — we created them right in the baby's nursery.

That's one of the things I love about in-home maternity sessions. We don't need a perfectly styled house or an elaborate setup. Give me some beautiful light, a gorgeous mama and a little room to work, and we'll create something special.

Because growing a whole human? That deserves to be documented.

Happy National Dog Day from the hardest-working employee at Moments by Sherri Photography.

Meet Harley.

His official job duties include:

• Supervising me while I edit
• Testing every available napping location
• Providing moral support during workouts
• Monitoring the backyard for highly suspicious activity
• Occasionally greeting clients
• Sleeping on the job approximately 87% of the workday

His compensation package includes treats, belly rubs and absolutely no accountability.

I'd fire him, but apparently he lives here.

There’s something extra special about maternity photos when a big sister gets to be part of the story.

Before the new baby arrives, there’s this little in-between season — the waiting, the wondering, the belly touches and conversations about the baby who will soon be here.

I love capturing these moments just as much as the beautiful portraits of mama alone.

Because someday, this little girl will be able to look back and see that she was part of her baby sibling’s story from the very beginning.

Maternity sessions aren’t only about documenting the bump. They’re about remembering what your family looked and felt like right before everything changed.

I bought this gold velvet gown knowing it was going to photograph beautifully...and YES. This is exactly what I had in mind.

I love being able to give moms-to-be something a little different from the traditional light and airy maternity session. The rich gold, the darker backdrop, the dramatic look—it all came together so well.
