Photographing in Tucson's barrios felt like a treasure hunt. I spent a couple of weeks wandering through eclectic neighborhoods and took over 100 photos for a 12 page editorial assignment about our barrios in the April 2026 edition of Arizona Highways Magazine. Free Speech Isn’t Free! A Comedy Fundraiser featuring FITZ, GLIX, MEMBRILA & STANLEY April 7 at the Century Room. Photographing four comedians is some kind of organized chaos. I tried working with them as a free wheeling group and then realized I needed a hook! I got them all inside a frame and it seemed to make them more of a “team”. This is one of those assignments that make you feel life is good as a photographer. We are down in the Sonoita Az wine region at Rune Wines; so near the border you can see mountains in Mexico. We spent the day setting up an assortment of photos but I always knew the last shot at sunset would be the one. It was one of those views demanding to be photographed, one of the times to have a great glass of wine and shoot. I just watched the magic happen in front of me. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

One of the most satisfying projects I've had for years is photographing master artists and craft people for the Southwest Folklife Alliance master apprentice awards. Every year is a new crop of talent. This is a photo of Raymond Malelo and Georgette Tabu, Congolese Gospel singers. I often ask musicians or performers to do something I might be able to photograph. When these two started singing it was as though a thousand watt lightbulb turned on and the whole room glowed. The other day somebody I didn't know stopped me to show me a photo and asked if I was into photography. It gave me something to think about. Possibly when I was in college I was into photography - now photography is in me! I was at a jazz concert a couple of weeks before I was asked to do this cover photo. Typically, waiting for the concert to begin, my usual thought process would revolve around how I would photograph this fabulous converted church. When asked to do that cover photo I had a déjà vu feeling that I had done it all before. https://www.mecklerphotography.com
