Last May, I found myself walking through the streets of London around 5 o’clock a number of times. I saw people overflowing from pubs onto the sidewalk, just chatting away… My kind of civilization. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

This photo of the poet Jonathan T. Bailey appears in September 2026 issue of Arizona Highways Magazine. I always show up with some concept or idea in mind so I can start without wasting time. I often try different compositions, lightnings and locations but this visual concept was in my mind from the beginning. It took some time and several different compositions before I could finally make it work. This photo is a mixture of flash lighting and natural light. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

You never know where a photo job is going to take you. The editorial client gave me free rein with the concept for this portrait. The idea for the photo came from conversations with the owner of Desert Mountain Didgeridoos, Kyle Bert. He makes them from agave. As we were driving to one of his favorite locations, he said that the agave in this photo will be made into a didgeridoo in about two years. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

Small business owners with brick and mortar stores always seem so passionate about what they do. Everything in their space is intentional. In the case of Desierto Books (on the west side of Tucson) everything is in its special place. This is a portrait of owner Cheron Taylor who seemed so comfortable sitting cross legged with a book in her lap. With environmental portraits sometimes simple and direct tells the story. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

I spent a couple years early in my photography career (1979-80 in Coney Island NYC) challenging myself to talk to and photograph strangers, and just trying to understand what photography means to me. I would shoot for a week or two at a time and then get to a dark room (sometimes my bathroom) and make contact sheets. I would use a grease pencil and loop to mark all over them trying to understand what I was seeing. That process was so exciting to me and I think laid the foundation that I built my career on. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

This is J. Edson “House” Magaña, Hip-hop Artist, dancer, performer, and educator working to empower young people in Phoenix toward a transformative form of self-expression. He is a 2024 awardee of the Southwest Folklife Alliance master apprentice program. Meeting and photographing these artists is a true joy. When they show up in my studio I always learn something and it pushes me forward. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

Cruising around barrios in Tucson can be like a treasure hunt with surprising finds. This photo was in a recent story in Arizona Highways Magazine and was captured in Barrio Anita. It is a shrine or chapel made of bicycle parts dedicated to people who have lost their lives riding bicycles in Tucson. I've been told it's a popular spot for wedding ceremonies. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

I always love photographing Tucson Meet Yourself. It’s a reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a culturally, vibrant and diverse community. Watch for it again this October. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/

Photographing in Tucson's barrios felt like a treasure hunt. I spent a couple of weeks wandering through eclectic neighborhoods and took over 100 photos for a 12 page editorial assignment about our barrios in the April 2026 edition of Arizona Highways Magazine. This one, in barrio Santa Rosa, was one of several that made it into print. https://www.mecklerphotography.com/
