This may look like monsoon clouds, but it is actually smoke rising from the Santa Catalinas. The Bighorn Fire, ignited by a lightning strike on June 5th, has now burned 51,628 acres. As of now the fire is 19% contained.

The Bighorn Fire, ignited by a lightning strike on June 5th, continues to rage in Tucson, Arizona. As of now over 12,000 acres have burned. Our thoughts are with the firefighters and other personnel trying to contain the blaze.

While running around taking pictures of our resident owls I happened to notice a beautiful monarch butterfly having a midday snack. I made sure to take a few pictures before returning the camera to our owl friends.

The rattle of a rattlesnake is made of a protein called keratin, the same protein that makes up our hair and fingernails. Each time a rattlesnake sheds its skin a new segment is added to the rattle. A rattlesnake can shake its rattle up to 60 times per second and it is used to ward of predators.

Sunken treasure! We found this sand dollar while strolling along Pacific Beach in San Diego, California. After taking a few pictures we were on our way and hopefully this sand dollar drifted back out to sea with the outgoing tide.

We were exploring Richardson Ocean Park in Hilo, Hawaii one rainy afternoon because we heard it was frequented by sea turtles. Danielle had to sit in the rain for quite awhile waiting for this sea turtle to pop its head out of the water. Sea turtles can hold their breath for 4-7 hours while resting, so we were lucky this guy decided to take a peek at us before going under for another nap.

Sage is a mountain lion cub that was rescued when he was only 6 weeks old after he was abandoned by his mother. Out of Africa Wildlife Park took him in and he is now a beloved member of their big cat family. We took this picture after Sage tired himself out playing with his many toys. You can visit Sage at Out of Africa in Camp Verde, Arizona. I'm sure he's grown quite a bit since this picture has been taken!

The Black-throated Monitor Lizard can be found in Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa. It is the heaviest-bodied lizard in Africa and mature males can weigh up to 35 pounds. This guy's name is Amani and you can visit him at Out of Africa Wildlife Park in Camp Verde.
