Being a great second shooter has very little to do with taking pretty photos—and everything to do with making the lead photographer’s job easier.

Here are a few habits that have helped me when second shooting weddings:

✨ Take behind-the-scenes content. Your lead will love having those memories and marketing content.
✨ Don’t overstep. If the lead photographer is directing, let them lead.
✨ Remember why you’re there. Your priority is capturing the images your lead needs, even if they aren’t the shots you’d personally choose.
✨ Arrive ready to shoot before your contracted start time. Batteries charged, settings checked, camera in hand.
✨ Be an extra set of hands. Carry bags, grab lenses, fluff dresses, move chairs, fix veils—look for ways to help without being asked.
✨ During family photos, if you have a free moment, grab the bride and groom a glass of water. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way on a busy wedding day.

The best second shooters aren’t just talented photographers—they’re dependable teammates. And those are the photographers who keep getting invited back.

Not every senior session has to be in the middle of downtown.
