✨ WORKING WOMEN’S WEDNESDAY ✨
Meet Sharon, owner of Macy’s Hairstyles in Central, Alabama.

For 40 years, Sharon has been doing hair, and for the last 27 years, Macy’s Hairstyles has been hers.

Forty years behind the chair means Sharon hasn’t just built a clientele — she’s watched entire generations grow up.

People whose hair she cut years ago now walk through her door with their children, grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren. In that little Central shopping center, her customers aren’t really customers anymore.

They’re family.

And if the walls of Macy’s Hairstyles could talk, they’d have plenty of stories to tell... but so would the chairs.

Those chairs actually survived a fire at Sharon’s first salon on Waterloo Road. When she opened her new place, they came with her, and all these years later, there they sit.

“I guess I could get new stuff,” she said, laughing, “but then I’d have to raise my prices, and my customers say my stuff works just fine.”

That little comment tells you a lot about Sharon.

She’s the kind of woman you can sit down with and immediately cut up with. The kind who laughs easily, knows everybody, and makes you feel less like you walked into a business and more like you stopped by to visit an old friend.

And somehow, 40 years of doing hair isn’t enough work for her.

When Sharon isn’t behind the chair, she also works a second job sitting with and caring for the elderly.

Maybe that shouldn’t be surprising.

Whether she’s taking care of somebody in her salon chair or sitting beside someone who needs a little extra care, Sharon has built a life around showing up for people.

40 years doing hair. 27 years owning Macy’s Hairstyles. Generations of customers turned family. A salon full of history — right down to the chairs.

Thank you, Sharon, for inviting me into your sweet little salon and treating me like family.🤍✂️

I started this page with a $300 used Nikon D5600 that I got off Facebook marketplace.
To many, that might not make sense but if you know cameras — she is an old girl.

And every penny I’ve made since then, I’ve poured right back into buying something that could better me, my work, and this little dream of mine.

It’s just a camera.

At the surface, that’s all it is.
A moderately expensive piece of equipment that I take pictures with. 😂

But to me, it signifies so much more.

It’s how much my husband believes in me. It’s him looking at something I care about and saying,
“Yeah. I think you can do this.”

But it’s also how much I’ve started believing in myself.

Because the investment hasn’t just been money.

It’s been time. So much time…😂 It’s been educating myself, watching tutorials, learning my camera, figuring out lighting, doing free shoots just so I could practice, making mistakes, coming home disappointed, figuring out what I did wrong, and going back out to try again.

I started O How Sweet because I loved taking pictures.

Somewhere along the way, though, I realized how badly I wanted to be good at this.

And now I look at this camera and I don’t just see what it cost. I see every session that helped pay for it. Every person who trusted me when I was still figuring things out. Every hour I’ve spent trying to get better. And a husband who has never once treated this like some silly little hobby of mine.

So yeah. It’s just a camera.

But damn, I’m proud of what it represents.

And I am so freaking excited to see where O How Sweet goes from here…

A small but important change for O How Sweet Photography 🤍

After giving it a lot of thought given the recent legislation in the US, I’ve decided that moving forward, I will no longer be sharing identifiable images of children’s faces on my public business page.

This does NOT mean I won’t be photographing your babies, toddlers, kiddos, or families — because those stories are such a huge part of why I love what I do. 🥹 Your galleries will still be filled with all of those sweet little faces and moments. You can absolutely share however you want…

This just simply means I’m changing what I choose to share publicly.

You may still see tiny hands wrapped around Mama’s finger, little feet running through the grass, curls from behind, silhouettes, snuggles, and all the beautiful details that tell a childhood story without identifying the child.

As a photographer, I’m constantly learning what it means to document people’s lives while also protecting the people who trust me with them. Children cannot fully understand or consent to having their images shared publicly, and I’ve decided I want to be more intentional about that responsibility.

Parents will always receive their full galleries and can choose what they feel comfortable sharing from them. 🤍

This is simply a boundary I’ve decided feels right for O How Sweet moving forward.

I can still tell the story.

I just don’t need to show every face to tell it. 🤍

WORKING WOMEN’S WEDNESDAY 💛 | SITTING SISTERS LLC

Some businesses start with a business plan.
This one started with someone who needed somebody to sit beside her.

Jessica Reaves started nursing during COVID while working at a local nursing home. During that time, she and a few of her coworkers began taking turns sitting with a woman and making sure she wasn’t alone. They continued until she passed away.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, Jessica realized just how much this kind of care mattered.

So she created Sitting Sisters LLC.

Jessica is a registered nurse, but after spending time with her, I realized pretty quickly that what makes her special goes far beyond the letters behind her name.

It’s the compassion.

The woman you see in these photos is Cookie. And Cookie isn’t just a “client” to Jessica. She’s moving soon, and when Jessica talked about her leaving, you could tell how genuinely sad she is about losing that time with her.

Because these people become her people.

She sits with them. She talks with them. She laughs with them. She listens to their stories. She cares about their lives. And somewhere along the way, they become family.

I stood in that living room watching Cookie absolutely light up talking to Jessica about their fingernails and I kept thinking about my own family.

We lost an uncle who I wish so badly could have had something like this. Someone we trusted to be there when we couldn’t be. Someone who didn’t make him feel like a task on a list, but like a person worth knowing.

And after meeting Jessica and seeing her with Cookie, I can say this without hesitation:

I would trust my family with her.

There are some jobs you can learn how to do.

But you can’t teach someone to care like this.

And Jessica? She cares. 💛

This week’s Working Women’s Wednesday is for Sitting Sisters LLC — and for the people who make a career out of making sure someone else never feels alone.

I’m doing a post to gauge interest…

I’ve had a few singles reach out & ask if I’d consider doing “Stranger Sessions”.

The Romantic Stranger sessions, many have seen them on TikTok, but for those of you who have not — I would pick out two singles, pose you like a couple and obviously you would have pictures and who knows? Maybe you start dating 🤷🏻‍♀️😇

If this is something you or someone you know might be open to, let me know 🤍
