There are so many elements of this that I love. The shadow and light play, the artwork mixed with the urban atmosphere, the reflection in the water, the dress and her dance pose with the graceful lines in juxtaposition of the hard concrete around her…it’s the details. Always.

This is a 50+ year old camera I have. I don't have any film for it and as far as I know there is only one place in the United States that I could send it for development anyway! BUT...It is still usable, as you can see! It's really fun to use during sessions and I haven't gotten it out in a while. I may need to pull it back out soon...

I hope everyone had a wonderful fourth! I took some pictures tonight with my phone camera to demonstrate the shutter speed differences I was taking about in the last post. These were taken just a few seconds apart. I used the Lightroom mobile app to take the pictures so I could adjust each setting manually on my phone camera. The only difference in them is the shutter speed.
Picture 1: iso 800; f1.6; 1/160 and the focal length was 26 mm.
Picture 2: iso 800; f1.6; 1/3200 and the focal length was 26 mm.

Take note of how much brighter the first image is as well as how much blurry the subject/action is. I exaggerated the shutter speed on purpose for this demonstration, but you can see how a fast speed will freeze action and details, however, it doesn’t let in as much light. Therefore, you may have to adjust your other settings. More on those another time!

Fast shutter speed vs Slow shutter speed: a quick beginner photography tip going into the holiday. For anyone wanting to photograph fireworks and shooting in manual mode - pay attention to your shutter speed and how it will affect your outcome. These images are examples I took of the exact same location only a few seconds apart. These are unedited SOC images.

Now, there are more settings than just shutter speed to consider, but you can see how a fast vs slow speed can create very different results. Remember that the shutter speed number is a fraction of a second. So 1/180 is 1/180th of a second and is slower than 1/500 (1/500th of a second). Thinking about it in terms of the fraction unit of time can help you remember how fast or slow you need it to shut to capture the image you’re wanting to get. Play around with it and see what results you get! You might end up creating some really cool effects!

I had to pack up today’s headshot photo shoot early due to technical difficulties. My syncs stopped syncing for both my monolight and speed lights. The speed light one worked for a bit, stopped, started again, and finally stopped a second time. So, I’ve got a couple of mysteries to solve before we try again for the rest of the headshots on Monday night! But it was so great seeing everyone this afternoon and I can’t wait to see you all again soon!
