Even the good ones get old

At first glance, most people would probably write off number 23 as nothing special, just a plain ol’ longhorn cross. Now well into her teens, she has proven herself to be anything but plain. To this day, she still holds the record for the heaviest calf I’ve ever weaned (which she did in a drought year on desert range pasture). Most years you wouldn’t see her after spring turnout until snow pushed her back down off the mountains, always in great shape with a big calf at her side. Even now, she has a perfect udder that shows no indication of her old age.

Up until this year, she has always been one of the first cows to calve. Last summer I saw her come into heat right at the beginning of the breeding season but she either did not take or lost the pregnancy early on because she did not calve until June this year. Her first misstep ever. She had a very flashy beefmaster heifer calf (only the second spotted calf she’s had) that has been growing like a w**d since she hit the ground.

She has a few daughters in the herd now, but with the oldest being just 4, time will tell if they can live up to her legacy.
