Joshua Tatro Photography

Joshua Tatro Photography JTP is a photography business descended from my longstanding passion for photography - a desire to frame the world and people in the best light.

"To take a photograph is to participate in another person's mortality, vulnerability, mutability."
-- Susan Sontag, from On Photography

My purpose and passion as a photographer is to utilize the power of pictures to halt and capture important moments in the lives of others - to provide a method of revisiting and appreciating that time at a later date. Through careful framing, lighting, and focus,

a picture can be a gateway, the 5 x 7" passage on a wall or mantle that serves as a window into what we cherish most and who we truly are to others. I'm here to put my years of experience photographing and editing such moments to work for you. Let's capture something beautiful together.

It's always a little sad when summer starts to wind down, but in truth autumn it's one of my favorite times of year, especially for couples shoots. The colors on the trees, the return of suave sweaters and jackets (imagine actually being comfortable in a suit!), and fewer crowds at iconic photo locations in the city -- what's not to like?

So obviously I haven’t felt much like posting in the past few months, but in is definitely a post-able highlight. In any case, if you have 2-3 days to kill in , camping and paddling here is worthwhile (if you have the skills and gear, that is, though guided tours are also a thing).

If it basically already looks like it's , then maybe stop fighting it? Anyway, this shot of from a few weeks back was a little underwhelming - even though it was pretty epic in person, so it's mostly on me - and color wasn't doing it any favors anyway.

Sun rising on 2022, optimistic yet also unable to shake last year’s baggage (hello omicron…), but also looking forward to more time with friends and family and hopefully some more semblance of a return to “normal,” whatever that means now.

10-stop ND filters: Because those aren't going to blur themselves (especially mid-morning in Icelandic ).

In a way, I feel like waterfall views in Iceland are a little too easy, however they may be -- they're just everywhere, and doing something as simple as a like this often adds *just enough* visual intrigue to make it Instagram worthy.

Still, at a location like that's normally crawling with people descending from tour busses, the temptation to get a pristine, isolated shot in great weather is hard to pass up. So I didn't. Can't say I didn't enjoy getting so many great views and hikes to myself this trip!

When I first started taking photos, I felt this constant need to chase sweeping vistas and the most dramatic skies I could find. These days I’m drawn much more to simple images that are defined by their composition and decisive management of what is (and isn’t) in the frame, which has the added benefit of letting me photograph something truly unique rather than the same ‘epic’ viewpoints everyone else is trying to rehash.

Growing up around watersports (sea kayaking in particular in my case) impacted me in a big way, both in terms of the skills I gained (e.g. backcountry camping, group leadership, and personal responsibility) as well as connections to the people who guided me along the way -- many of whom have remained lifelong friends and mentors.

That kind of stewardship in a sport is so important and horizon-broadening that it's almost impossible to overstate the positive impact it can have for young people from all backgrounds. As such, I can't say enough how impressed I was/am with all the work going on Jackson Park Yacht Club when it comes to youth sailing and instruction. Far from just "summer fun" (though there's plenty of that, too!), their programming provides kids with essential opportunities to embrace independence and self-sufficiency in a way that can last a lifetime.

Why should you get vaccinated if you're able? Well, aside from not becoming deathly ill and protecting others (which is honestly its own reward, imo), Iceland is only letting vaccinated individuals into the country. Ask me how I know.

Just something I've been working on with the very nice folks over at Jackson Park Yacht Club -- did you know they just had opening day for their 125th season? Talk about a south side institution!

One of the many nice things about the when it comes to photography is that it's generally pretty easy to find good "mood" for an image, usually in the way of fog and low-lying clouds. The added texture and depth can make even somewhat mundane or lazy snaps (like this one) look fairly interesting!
