Happy “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” Day! Some fan pages celebrate June 29, 1998, while others celebrate July 6, 1998. Oddly enough, they’re both right.

June 29 marks the song’s radio rollout, when it began reaching listeners through rock stations. July 6 marks its official commercial single release through Maverick Records. In the late ‘90s, those dates were often separate, which explains why you’ll still see both celebrated today.

Beyond the dates, this song represents something much bigger. It showed the world that Deftones could be heavy without sacrificing beauty, and emotional without losing intensity. That balance would become one of the defining characteristics of the band’s unique sound. 27 years later, “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” still feels just as powerful.

“Mascara” has always been one of those songs that gives me goosebumps and pulls me into a trance-like state.

The melodies are haunting, the atmosphere feels dreamlike, and that iconic guitar riff by Stephen pulls everything into a slow, hypnotic tension.

On the surface, it sounds romantic, but underneath lies something much darker. The lyrics blur the line between love, obsession, resentment, and possession, ending with one of the most chilling closing lines in Deftones catalog. It’s precisely that duality that makes “Mascara” one of my favorite and most replayed tracks from 𝘈𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘳. It’s beautiful yet eerie, loving yet hateful, it’s perfect imperfection (also the inspiration behind some of my poetry).

26 years ago, released 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘯𝘺 and forever changed the trajectory of alternative metal.

For me, 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘯𝘺 is more than just an album, it’s my favorite Deftones record of all time and one of the most important albums of my life. I discovered it during some of my most formative years, thanks to a dear friend (RIP James), and over time it became a part of who I am. The themes of sensuality, danger, temptation, risk, and transformation still feel just as captivating today as they did the first time I heard them. Zero skips, endless replay value; a true five star masterpiece, and forever the soundtrack of all my vampire dreams. Happy 26th Anniversary, 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘯𝘺 🤍
