Nyaung U, Burma, 2005. Going through photos from my travel Photography days I found this image. I used to like to be invited into peoples homes, particularly in much more rural areas where there was no electricity. It was usually dramatic lighting, often filled with cooking fire smoke, and usually just a few shafts of light trickling through a palm frond roof. I sat and shared tea with this man for a bit, and though we could not communicate with language, he was a gentle man and offered his space generously.

Recent shoot for TLC’s “Forbidden Love”. Consistently a good time with the TLC creative team as they are always interested in pursuing the best creative idea. That’s a real joy to work with and makes the process fun. So this one was particularly great as we shot a more dramatic cinematic style of portraiture.

The mad genius known as Jesse James. I gotta say I love this guy, and though we might disagree on some things (!!) I have deep respect for a true artisan, a master of his craft. Plus he has pretty decent taste in music.

Father and sick daughter at a rural medical clinic, Backwaters of Kerala, India. Continuing from my book project - “Land of Dusk.”
I shot this deep in the backwaters of Kerala, the coastal community of connecting waterways that stretches through India’s southwest region. It’s a magical environment of small rural villages, connected by canals through the teeming jungle.
This was a small clinic far from any city, and what you see here is the extent of what the clinic was able to offer. It was mostly tinctures and traditional medicines.
At the time, I thought it was a fascinating insight into what this type of life held. But now that I have kids, this picture hits very, very differently. And all I can think of is what it must have felt like to hold her small body while afraid and the look in the father’s eyes.

More work from my upcoming photo book - “Land of Dusk.” Two Dogs and an ancient Stupa, Isle Lake, Burma.
It might be surprising to hear, but I have recently had a number of conversations about “stupas,” or traditional Buddhist temples and reliquaries. This is because I am on the Board of Directors for Shambhala International, a multinational Buddhist organization. And so our discussions of Stupas have taken me back to much quieter times when I traveled simply, just two cameras slung over my shoulders, a bag of Velvia slide film on my belt.
This was dusk at an ancient crumbling temple complex overlooking Lake Isle, in central Burma. And these two dogs felt it was VERY important I knew they were keeping these ruins safe. And when I say “ruins” that is not totally factual, as these were still living, holy stupas visited daily by locals of the lake.

Taj Mahal and Boys Running in the Late Afternoon, Agra, India.
More work for my first photo book - “Land of Dusk” - covering my travels through Asia as a photographer.
I have been to the Taj Mahal four times now, and though I rarely connect with “things,” this building moves me as I often think it is the closest I have come to seeing something that is manmade approach something close to being “perfect” (I understand that sounds crazy). But this sense allows it to reflect back whatever we bring to it. I have so many photos of the place - which I will share here - and each is uniquely different. And many years later, I have come to understand that what is reflected back is what I, the observer, bring to it.

Very excited to announce that my podcast Big Deep has been nominated for an Ambie, which is considered the Oscars of podcasting and bestowed by the Podcast Academy.
Big Deep is a podcast about the ocean and has been shortlisted alongside some other high-profile shows, so I am super honored. And though the show has gotten popular over the years, it feels good to have the show recognized within the podcasting community.
Stay tuned as the Award Ceremony is on March 26th at the Beverly Hilton. Woot!

Excited to be working on a photo book(!!) - “Land of Dusk” - covering my travels through Asia as a photographer.
This first one is from Vietnam, deep in the Mekong Delta, near Tra Vinh. This was early in the morning, maybe 530am, and I was walking through a mist-covered jungle when I came upon this street sweeper and a stray dog. It was hot and humid, even this early, and I spent a good ten minutes with him as he worked and walked.
I am digging through my archives and re-scanning all my slide film (you can see the edges of the cardboard frame in the corners) and I am uncovering all sorts of images I have not seen in years. Very much looking forward to this project.
It will probably take a year to gather all the images, but if you are interested in a copy of the book once it comes out, let me know.

Nate in his flower garden. Nate is an urban farmer in Sacramento who has a plot behind his family homes where he grows flowers and ethnic-appropriate cooking chilis for the local farm workers who hail from all around the world. Part of the incredible work he is doing in the Ujaama Farmer Collective, and part of the larger project I am shooting with CAFF.
