Famous novels, six-toed cats, a plethora of hunting trophies, and a vast collection of art stand out from my visit to the home of Ernest Hemingway. It humbled me to stand where he once stood and realize that he wasn't just a character from my history books but a living, complex human who created enduring pieces of literature.

On the day I visited, I was lucky enough to photograph one of the famous six-toed cats catching some sunshine on the porch.

Niki prints her images on fiber-base black and white mat surface paper in the darkroom, then using Q-tips and cotton balls, she applies a thin coat of oil paint over the surface allowing the image to gently be seen through the oil paint.

The joy of the textures of ferns, palm leaves, and the trunks of palm trees is always fascinating to me. I love seeing them all together. They are especially wonderful when a soft breeze rocks them back and forth and they dance in the wind. I would have a hard time living without seeing them. Such wonderful texture!

Every spring we get an abundance of Blue Flag Iris around our back pond at Big Cypress Gallery. It is always a joy to see them decorating the edge of the pond. There is something wonderful and reassuring about seeing the beauty of these flowers every spring.

This small building was once a schoolhouse for the lighthouse keepers’ children on the island. At the time I photographed the building, it was in poor condition and eventually it was torn down.

However, at the time I was there the fishermen at the southern end of the island used it for a storage area. Since it had no door I took a peak inside and was amazed at what I found – Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck! It was an image that I just couldn’t pass up!

🎨✨ Niki Butcher has spent decades capturing Florida's wild beauty alongside Clyde Butcher.

Inspired by vintage postcards, she transforms her photographs into colorful dreamscapes. What began with oil paints, Q tips, and cotton balls now comes to life through digital artistry.

Part photograph, part imagination, each piece is uniquely Niki. 💚🌿

I have always loved seeing Islander Trading Post Antiques on Sanibel Island. It is wonderfully funky! So, when we took a photo trip to the island, this was one of the first places I photographed.

Wandering through the streets of Key West is always a joy. I love the atmosphere and the unique tropical homes people have. There is a peace about Key West that I haven’t found anywhere else in the country.

When I saw this home, I loved the welcoming feeling and couldn’t resist taking a photograph. If you recognize this home, but something seems slightly different, it is because I colored it the way I would if it was mine to paint.

That is one of the best parts of hand-painting photographs. You get to create the world as you would like it to look.

I recently came across this photograph that I hand-painted years ago. At the time it seemed romantic, but today with global warming I’m not so sure…

Boating in the Florida Keys is a beautiful experience. When Clyde and I came across this mangrove at Money Key, we both jumped at the opportunity to photograph it.

On the day we found this mangrove, I ran out of memory on my card so I knew I had to return another day. The day Clyde photographed the mangrove, he captured clouds behind the mangrove but my sky was empty of clouds.

I like the simplicity of the empty sky against the simplicity of the graceful movement of the roots of the mangrove. The same tree, yet a different perspective.

When I saw the absolute joy on this musician's face I couldn't resist taking a photo. It's always a beautiful thing to watch an artist who is honestly in love with what they are doing. It's as though they have entered into a different dimension.

I had a great time hand-painting the image using heavy oil paint, but what made it so much fun to paint was the fact that the musician obviously loved what he was doing and it filled me with joy because I was doing what I loved to do too.
