Last night my wife Laura and I were invited to attend the 10 Years Free celebration for WP journalist Jason Rezaian at the Washington Post Headquarters in DC. It was an excellent evening of panel discussions, family friends and fantastic Persian food and adult beverages. Years ago I featured portraits of both on my Instagram page. Jason's mother Mary is my Mother in Law's (Judy) first cousin, so Laura and Jason are second cousin's. Some of you might know Jason's story. He is best known for his work as The Washington Post’s former Tehran bureau chief and for his wrongful imprisonment in Iran. Born in California to an Iranian father and an American mother (Mary), Jason moved to Tehran in the late 2000s, where he covered Iranian politics, culture, and U.S.–Iran relations with a rare blend of local insight and accessibility.

In July 2014, Jason was arrested by Iranian authorities and held for 544 days on espionage-related charges that were widely condemned as baseless. His detention became an international cause célèbre, drawing attention to press freedom, hostage diplomacy, and the risks faced by journalists working under authoritarian regimes. He was released in January 2016 as part of a prisoner exchange between Iran and the United States.

Since his release, Jason has become a prominent voice on journalism, foreign policy, and wrongful detention. He has written extensively about his experience, including his memoir Prisoner (great read also on Audible), and continues to advocate for press freedom and the release of unjustly detained Americans abroad. He now serves as the WP Director of Press Freedom Initiatives.

Laura and I first met Jason as a curly haired 18 year old soon to be high school graduate. She and I were newlyweds and new home owners (around 1993) when a distant relative (Mary) asked if he could stay with us while he checked out a few local college campuses in the area. I distinctly recall him sitting in our then 70's era basement with its outdated dark paneling and green s**g carpet looking bright eyed and ready to explore the world.

Both now live locally to us and we have enjoyed getting to know them over the years. Mary is a worldly seasoned traveler with many stories to share and is deeply connected to Persian history, politics, and current events. She is a joy to speak with. She and Laura and Laura's mother Judy are planning a trip to Turkey where Mary lived for many years.

Last night prompted me to revisit my portfolio of portraiture I did of Mary, Jason and Jason's lovely wife Yegi back in 2018 and 2016. A few of these I have never shared. I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to capture their warmth, resilience, and quiet strength.

Meet Nurse Rachel, my beautiful niece and a very talented young lady. A few years back she was not quite sure what she wanted to do in life but nursing was always on her radar. When she finally committed to the journey she never looked back. She completed all her course work by last December and now only needs to pass her licensing exam. Also, she has already accepted a position with INOVA here in Virginia. She’s all set. Congratulations Rachel and good luck on your exam. Your Momma, Aunts and Uncles are super proud of you as are your grandparents💕.

In September 2025 I gave witness to the wedding of my niece (and Godchild) Mary Pat to Joe in a beautiful mountain location across from Pikes Peak. I managed to capture a few photos of a wonderful time. I wish them both all the best and a long life together.

Made sure I did not miss the colors. This is our first year owning a home in the valley and we've been waiting all year for this moment. Worth the wait. What a beautiful place Virginia is and especially the Bayse/Shenandoah Valley. So much history, so much beauty.

I'm inclined to agree. :)

A recent study found the following....

What we see in the data and from the stories parents send us is both simple and poignant: Kids being raised on screens long for real freedom. It’s like they’re homesick for a world they’ve never known.

Granting them more freedom may feel uncomfortable at first. But if parents want their kids to put down their phones, they need to open the front door. Nearly three-quarters of the children in our survey agreed with the statement “I would spend less time online if there were more friends in my neighborhood to play with in person.”

Scouting is the door.

What’s on the other side is confidence, character, and community.

Two outstanding gentlemen who spent their summer providing Health and Safety support to the . Both Eagle Scouts giving back to the Scouting America Program they grew up in. Jonathan Bjorson is a pediatric emergency and trauma nurse in Roanoke Va and returns each summer to mentor staff, support campers, and blend his clinical skills with the mission of scouting. He enjoyed his scout journey with Troop 445 in Damascus Md. He has been on staff since 2012. James Doonan of Troop 429 in Chesapeake Beach Md previously worked at Camp Olmsted in 2017 and 18. Now a full time paramedic he returned to camp and has become a vital part of the Health Lodge team. They like to keep things simple while at camp: be safety minded, stay fun focused, and always meet the mission of Scouting America. Third photo is a digitized photo of the Health Lodge in 1967. It looks very similar today.

Each summer I get to work with interesting adults at Scout Camp. I met Tony a few summers ago. Now in his 70s he still makes time to train new staff members and work with Scouts for fun or for completing Merit Badges. He is the National Capital Area council’s (NCAC) COPE and Climbing Chairman and avid Instructor. He was recently awarded one of Scouting’s highest honors, the Silver Beaver, for his many contributions. It took me several attempts to convince him to sit still for a portrait. Thank you Tony for all you do. Last image is one of Tony’s assistants, Justice, from the Camp Olmsted Staff.
