Anyway… here’s my home office. And yep, it has all five. 😏
I’m in a season of life where my office has to be at home, and an in-home office sometimes comes with compromise. Would I love a separate space outside of my home with a door I could fully shut? Of course. But this setup has its own serious perks - no building rent, and the flexibility to work when and how I actually work best.
So let’s go through the controversial “rules”:
PERSONAL DECOR
My work is deeply creative. A space that feels like me doesn’t distract from the work, it fuels it. The color and the art are part of how I think.
WORKOUT EQUIPMENT
Movement keeps my brain on. Stepping away for a few minutes mid-day is a feature of working from home, not a flaw.
PET STUFF
It’s their home too. And honestly? My Litter Robot keeps the mess AND the smell at bay, and their toys live in a basket so cute it earns its own spot. No surprise Zoom cameos here (okay, maybe a few - but the good kind).
KID TOYS
This has been my kid’s art room for four years. There is no version of me that takes that away from him for a tidier corner.
NOSTALGIC ITEMS
The Lisa Frank, the whimsy - some of them live in a box I can pull out whenever I want. But “little Madison” is at this desk just as much as grown-up Madison is. Whimsy isn’t something you can switch off and on. It’s what people pay me for.
Is it “perfect”? Nope. Is it mine, and is it working? Absolutely.
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect, separate, magazine-ready office before you start - consider this your sign. You don’t need perfect. You just need to begin. 💛
And speaking of beginning: If you’ve been wanting to begin posting more content like this - the kind that feels personal but still actually resonates - that’s exactly what I create for my clients. Sign up to work with me (link in bio 👀).
