Over the long weekend I had the opportunity to spend some time in the water with my husband without the kids! It was amazing. Until we came across something horrifying. On our way out to enjoy our beautiful inlet, we saw some people fishing and crabbing at ’s nature preserve area. This is very common, so we waved as we paddled by. We noticed something floating right next to the people wading in the water with their crabbing gear so we assumed it was something marking a crab trap. About an hour or so later, we paddled by the same spot on our way back to the kayak launch area. The floating thing was oddly still there so we got a little closer to see if the fishers/crabbers had left behind trash- which you know is a very common occurrence, if you’ve been following me for any amount of time. We pick up after the fishermen regularly. This time around it was even worse than just the usual pile of trash. It was a beautiful turtle that had been hooked by a line left behind in the water. One of our beloved diamondback terrapins got hooked while swimming and was unable to free itself. It suffered trying to escape. And died. This is heartbreaking all on its own. But what’s even more disturbing is the complete apathy exhibited by the other humans who just stood in the water, next to a dead, trapped turtle, WAVING HELLO to us and SMILING as we paddled by. I can’t even comprehend this. It makes me physically nauseous even writing this out right now. My husband and I paddled over and worked hard to get set this poor soul free so it wouldn’t be stuck there, hooked by human garbage until it decomposed. We were far too late, but we set it free anyway. It didn’t deserve to float there, trapped and on display for all the fishermen, boaters, crabbers...humans. If you fish in these precious waters, I’m BEGGING you to do EVERYTHING you possibly can to remove your lines, hooks, nets, lures, and garbage from this treasured area of beauty and wildlife. Fellow humans- we have to do better. We must. This turtle deserved to enjoy these waters far more than we deserve to. We’re ruining it. And it’s not fair. It’s heartbreaking 💔 @ Pleasure House Natural Area
