What is one of the most important things to consider when building your vehicle? Your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) This is the first of a series of Instagram posts discussing what it takes to upgrade your vehicle to carry more weight.
Vehicles have a maximum amount of weight that they are designed to carry. The manufacturer puts this there to ensure that your suspension works as it should, your brakes don't overheat, your driveline isn't strained beyond what it can handle, and many other factors. We’ve tried it, you’ve seen others try it, and countless vehicles are driving around over their GVWR without upgrading the vehicle to handle the weight properly.
There is no easy way to upgrade this GVWR rating legally. If your vehicle is over GVWR, you might be liable if you damage the vehicle and try to repair it under warranty, get in an accident, or worse. So any modifications to “raise” this GVWR are done in a grey area.
Swapping out suspension is the first step in upgrading the vehicle to carry more weight. This is a series of components that's sole job is to hold the vehicle's weight, keep all 4 tires planted on the ground, and provide ride comfort in rough conditions. This upgrade usually consists of larger diameter shocks, stronger coils/springs, upgraded control arms, larger sway bars, airbags for variable load control, and possibly more depending on the load height/weight.
We’ve seen it countless times, the vehicle gets lifted, and you move on to your next mod. Then, a year or two later, you end up with more weight added to the vehicle and the same suspension that's sagged out and barely carrying the load. When choosing a lift kit, plan out what else you’d like to add in the future. If you’re unsure, pick a suspension that's adjustable to accommodate for changes in the future. Lift kits can be expensive, so trying to nail this the first time is recommended, but sometimes you have to upgrade certain things down the road.
