I just returned from a visit to Shore Acres. The best part of going on a trip is coming home! I am doing much better on my news diet than on my food diet. Maybe it is due to the fact that the news I am trying to resist is often painful and depressing, while the foods I am trying to resist are yummy and satisfying.
A lot of people are flocking to Bluesky, but I am just not ready to flock anywhere. I will wait and see.

Sometimes I don't feel creative. I've found that being creative fuels more creativity. How to start? I come up with little tricks. I tell myself to take just one image or do a little work in Lightroom, then I can stop. I never do. One photograph leads to another and another. When I was in Newport, I had a few minutes to spare before going to the theater. This scene really captured my attention. I pulled out my cell phone and just started to shoot.

I had the privilege of meeting Ray Bradbury several times and found him to be a fascinating man. He could observe a simple situation and create a story about it. People would often gather around him, hoping for clues on how to be creative. His advice was to stop watching the news. He said it could kill creativity. I don't think he meant that one shouldn't be informed, but we should not allow the news to take over our daily lives. I have decided to go on a "news diet." (I hope I am more successful that on my food diet.) There is so much content out there - too much, in fact - that I don't need to hear a news story from multiple sources.

Okay, one more photo of Sahalie Falls, the back to Yachats. Even though I life close to a rocky shoreline, I find myself taking trips to other sources of water. It fascinates me. Maybe it is the power of the water. Or it could be the random motion that is always different. Or maybe the ocean is so overpowering that I feel small, rendering my problems small as well. Of course, there is the sound of rushing water or pounding waves that calms me.

Remember when Ken Gagne used to post beautiful photos of our area? When I moved up here, I joined in the fun. Then COVID happened and everything just stopped. I thought Yachats was the most beautiful place on earth and never wanted to leave. Okay, so sometimes I have to go on a little adventure to see some other beautiful spots and fully appreciate home when I return. Fall is the perfect season for a quick trip and I chose the Horse Creek Lodge in McKenzie Bridge where I rented a little cabin for me and my dog Pookie. The lodge offers shuttles and rental bikes for the McKenzie River Trail, as well as river rafting. I also went to one of my favorite stops, Sahalie Falls. What surprises me about Oregon is that you can just pull off the road and find yourself in some amazing spots.

Six years ago, I moved to Yachats without having any friends or family here. It was one of the best decisions I made. One reason I moved here was to cut down on the stress of living in Southern California. Unfortunately, we can't avoid stress, especially now. I wanted to offer some thoughts: (1) your brain is your private sanctuary and no one is admitted in unless you grant permission, (2) the importance of art, not just in expressing joy, but also in expressing anger and despair, and (3) nature is healing. There are no politics in looking at a lovely sunset or birds in flight. Take a walk in the forest or along the beach. Focus on your surroundings and the wildlife around you.

This is how it started. About a year ago, a woman came into my gallery and proposed a project that she had been working on. The concept was to take a photograph and turn it over to an artist to interpret the photo. The painting would then be turned over to another painter, who would also do an interpretation. I believe about 4-5 artists were involved on my photograph. Frankly, I lost track of what happened and then was contacted about an upcoming show in Lincoln City at the Lincoln City Cultural Center to show the results. The Opening Reception is on January 5, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. I have not seen the paintings so I am pretty excited to see what they came up with. I believe there are other photographers involved as well. You can find out more here: https://lincolncity-culturalcenter.org/events/the-telephone-game-group-invitational/
