The best rodeo photographs usually aren't accidents.

Before I press the shutter, I'm already thinking about where the action is going, where I need to be, what the background will look like, and what photograph I'm trying to make.

That's one of the central ideas I teach in my Pro Rodeo Photography Workshop:

Stop guessing at your shots.

Learn to read the arena. Anticipate what's coming. Put yourself in position before the photograph happens.

And don't spend the entire rodeo parked in one location waiting for the hero shot. A professional photographer has a responsibility to photograph the whole rodeo.

That's what we'll be working on this Saturday in Workshop I: Foundations.

Are you photographing the rodeo, or just waiting for the hero shot?

It's something I've watched rodeo photographers do for years. Find the one position that produces a spectacular photograph, stay there, and ignore most of the rest of the rodeo.

There's a better way to work.

My Pro Rodeo Photography Workshop I this Saturday isn't about memorizing somebody else's camera settings. It's about learning to read the arena, anticipate what's coming, position yourself deliberately, stop guessing at your shots, and photograph the entire rodeo with purpose.
