It’s a Long-toed Lapwing. I’ve photographed a few before, but this is my first flight shot of one.
I know I have shown you all a lot of birds, but there are so many different birds and I wanted to show you at least one of every species I photographed, whether it be mammal, reptile or bird and they were presented here in the order they were taken.
Hopefully you have enjoyed this virtual safari.

Intermediate Egret. Sometimes the ID isn’t that easy but I think I got it right. The gape extended to the front of the eye. Not being a true “birder”, proper identification isn’t always easy. Anybody think I missed this one??

It’s an African Marsh Harrier, another first for my portfolio. As it flew, it kept it’s head down looking for prey. Only when it banked then turning was it’s yellow eye catching some light.

Pied Kingfishers are probably the most common kingfisher species along this stretch of the Chobe River. Personally, I like this shot because it shows a bit of the habitat as well as the detail of the bird as it is taking off. What do you think?

OK, I don’t think Marabou Storks are the prettiest birds. But, they do help fill a vital role. They are scavenges who clean up the remains of dead animals. They let the vultures rip up carcasses and then move in to clean up. I have even seen one swallow a led bone of a small antelope.

It’s a Squacco Heron. Try saying that twice – I struggle with it. They winter in Africa, but their breeding range is in southern Europe and the Middle East.

It is a Striated Heron. I found it interesting that in addition to southern Africa, they are also found in South America, southern Asia and northern Australia. They get around.
