Have you been enjoying our funerary art and cemetery symbolism stories?
We have decided to make this a weekly series called Tombstone Tuesday, where we will share beautiful photos from the cemetery captured by and the meanings behind the many symbols and iconography found upon the tombstones.

This week’s symbol is books. A book on tombstone may represent the Book of Life or the scriptures, as a sign of faith and is often shown as a Bible.
Books also depict learning and could indicate that a scholar, a teacher or someone who worked as a writer, bookseller, or publisher is buried at the gravesite.
An open book can signify an early death for someone whose life story was not yet fully written, and the most common form is the book as a double page spread.
