flew halfway around the world for sruthi and naahushi and i’d do it again tomorrow. the colors, the energy, the talambralu rice raining down, and somewhere inside all that beautiful chaos, these two kept finding little pockets of stillness that were just theirs.
congratulations you two ❤️

dolly parton, feb 10 2009

very early in my career, i photographed her at the national press club in dc. it was my first major receiving line, and i was very much still figuring things out as i went. some of the lighting worked. some of it absolutely did not. dolly was gracious, animated, and genuinely kind through every interaction.

because we’d been having such quick, natural interactions throughout the receiving line, she seemed to genuinely like me… although i suspect she had the gift of making everyone feel that way. when the line was finished, she stepped aside and gave me another 30 seconds to make a portrait.

nikon d300. sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 at 50mm. 1/200, f/2.8, iso 500. one of the first softboxes i’d ever owned.

i learned a lot about photography that day, especially how much the direction of light matters, but the thing i remember most is her kindness. sometimes you just need someone to like you enough to give you an extra 30 seconds.

rest in peace, dolly.

photography never taught me how to make things beautiful, it taught me to hold still long enough to notice they already were. once that happens you stop needing quiet to feel calm, and chaos feels like home.

most of these with canon 45mm tilt shift mounted to the nikon zf, which i think is my favorite street photography combo, ever.

wrapping up these edits at 3am in my hotel room ❤️Shruti and Naahushi walked me around ISB, a campus where she used to work… and briefly his set, since he’s a photographer too.

both showed up ready for anything. later that night, after lots of hugs and drinks at a cocktail party we got on the topic of what it means to be a photographer, and he read me a line from his journal “somewhere along the way, i feel like i didn’t choose photography. photography chose me.”

couldn’t have said it better, and i’ve been trying for sixteen years.
