Country Church

On my way out to North Bend yesterday morning I couldn't resist stopping to get a photo of this little country church in the morning fog along the way. You see these white wooden churches all throughout rural West Virginia and really Appalachia in general.

While Blackwater Falls SP is mainly known for its waterfalls and canyon vistas I always like to look around for other smaller scenes that are often overlooked like this clear and open forest.

Heavy rains from a couple days ago lead to an unusually high water level for the river for this time of year, particularly compared to the dry autumns we have had the past few years.

Morning at Oak Creek (Sedona, August 2026)

I don't think there is any better feeling than when you go out a trail you've never hiked before and you get to a destination you have always dreamed of, only to find you have the whole place all to yourself. Only the sounds of nature surround you. A gently running stream, a subtle rustling of the wind through the trees, or maybe no sounds at all. And for just a moment you get a glimpse of what it must have been like when the first explorer stepped foot on that very spot.

Anyone making the drive to Seneca Rocks on US Route 33 will pass this iconic barn just before the highway begins to descend the eastern side of the Allegheny Front.
