Country Roads and Smoke Filled Skies

The heavy smoke that blanketed much of the Ohio Valley late last week from the wildfires also created some very nice ethereal light in the early morning hours.

Driving West Virginia back roads and taking pictures takes me back to the 1970s when I got my first real camera. It was a nice break from studying accounting!

This time of year the fog doesn't last that long before it is burned off and it's generally light and spotty. Perfect for an early morning drive in the countryside.

The Dark Day.

The Peoples Cartage Fire in Wood County, WV on 7-5-2027. I'm not a photojournalist by any means but wanted to capture a few shots of yesterday's fire.

An Amber Evening. 6.18.26

After a day of heavy storms late this week the atmosphere turned that magical yellow-orange color at the time of sunset. The crimson red glow of the sun glancing off of the post-storm clouds was a bonus. These type of conditions never last long, often only a few minutes. I got there just in time to get this hand-held shot before the light faded away into darkness.

It's that time of the year when everything really does look like a tropical rain forest. I wish I had a little lifting fog in the gorge for this photo, but it's why you keep going back.

Spring at the Glade Creek Mill at Babcock State Park (5-7-2026)

I took the new camera out yesterday for the first time, and decided that the most photographed site in West Virginia would be a good place to break it in. Now if only we could get this kind of water flow here in the fall.

Looking down Linville Gorge.

Linville Gorge is sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of the east with it's 2000 foot deep gorge dropping down to the Linville River far below. I once witnessed an air force jet flying down the canyon from this very spot, and it was still well below where I was standing as it went by. Off in the distance to the left is the flat topped Table Rock Mountain, a popular hiking destination. I hope to get up there someday.

This photo was taken from Wisemans View on the west side of the canyon. It was quite the ride just getting to it in on the rough Linville Wilderness forest road in my Nissan Rogue, but it all added added up to a fun day of adventure.
