I’m just a couple of minutes by vehicle from the Kodiak Airport, at a location that has provided incredible opportunities to see bears. ❤️🐻

I’ve been able to spend over twelve hours watching the bears at Womens Bay during my three days here.

So you found yourself in bear country and you’re out looking for bears? 🐻 Well…it’s time to get to know your Poo💩’s and don’ts.

Be on the lookout for “Poo💩”. It can tell you bears have been in the area, how recently, what they’ve been eating, and hey, don’t step in it. 🥾

“Poo💩 Found” can be a good thing. You’re finding bear sign. Just be careful you don’t end up “Knee Deep in Poo💩”.

“Knee Deep in Poo💩” is a bad place to be. It’s considered the closest you can get to becoming a “Piece of Poo💩”, and you don’t want to become a “Piece of Poo💩”. There’s no coming back from that.

When seeing salmon up along the banks near the mouth of a river, creek, or stream, take note of what they look like.

Some are largely intact, just dead or dying salmon at the end of their natural life cycle after returning from the ocean to spawn.

Then there are the ones that look completely different.

Some are ripped open or completely in half. Others have sections missing that look almost surgically removed, and some look like they were stuffed into a blender and spun into oblivion.

Those are the fish I’m paying attention to.

They can be evidence that bears have been feeding nearby, and where those remains are concentrated can help tell you how bears are using the area.

I started about a mile upstream and worked my way toward the ocean, paying attention to where these fish were showing up.

Think of it like zoning.

I’m not necessarily looking for the bears right now. I’m identifying their city streets, the routes they travel, and their residential neighborhoods, where they may be spending more of their time.

Learn to read the signs, and finding bears becomes a lot less about luck.

Think Beluga Point on the Seward Highway is the only place around Anchorage to spot belugas? Think again. 🐋

Ship Creek in Anchorage is another excellent location, in fact, it’s just one of several places around town where you might catch a glimpse of these incredible whales.

But don’t just take my word for it.

The “40 mile Caribou Herd” and where to find them.

A herd once numbered at half a million in the 1930s is still thriving, after dropping below 5k by 1973.

In 2017, Alaska Fish & Game numbered the herd around 73k, but current numbers show them below 30k.

These numbers are not good numbers, not to the hunters and certainly not to the animals themselves, but to a photographer or a family wanting to spend time in easy to access Alaskan nature, those numbers really don’t matter.

Eagle Summit at the beginning of August has never let me down. Year after year, I see the 40 mile Caribou Herd.

The caribou will be traveling, SW (left side of the road) to NE (right side of the road) along their migration routes this time of year, and those routes travel directly through Eagle Summit.

Eagle Summit is a 3,652’ gap through the White Mountains. Eagle Summit and the surrounding areas off the Steese Hwy is well known for hiking, biking, off-roading, camping, mining claims, and if you’re like me, viewing wildlife.

FINDING CONTENTMENT

There is a moment when hunting caribou, after you’ve cut off the herd and come face to face with the one you wanted.

It’s almost like he knows what’s next.

Time stands still for a moment and everything goes quiet, until it doesn’t.

The sound of a rifle round cracks the air and echoes into the distance. A rush of adrenaline mutes both your bodies, and you’re locked together in a moment until the calm silence returns and that moment fades away.

This time, it was very different.

Nature stayed quiet.

Just because I don’t use my face as a profile picture doesn’t mean I’m not a real person.

And just because we don’t have a Ho***rs doesn’t mean Alaska doesn’t have a place where you can have dinner and stare at a couple of fake ones hanging out on their balcony.

Settlers Bay Lodge is one of the best restaurants in Alaska.

Having dinner out on the deck during the summer and staring at the mountains is one of the highlights of the season.

Spotting this owl here was a real hoot too!

Go for the food and enjoy the views.
