Where should you not put a carbon monoxide detector?

In close proximity to any fuel-burning appliance. In excessively humid areas such as your bathroom. In direct sunlight. Near any sources of blowing air such as a fan, vent or open window.

How many smoke and carbon detectors do I need?

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home, including the basement. Fire detectors should also be installed inside of every bedroom and outside of each sleeping area.
