Giddyup! It's National Day Of The Cowboy, Today we tip our hats to those brave, boot-scootin', chaps-wearin', “yeehaw means I love you” souls who roam the open range with nothing but a horse, a hat, and a pocket full of jerky. Buck Wi******er is searching for a lost calf that wandered off last night chasing a tumbleweed. Buck is speeding through Gopher Gulch on his trusty steed, Nutmeg. Bright red cactus blooms are a blur as Nutmeg's hooves thunder across the rocky ground. Buck won't give up until his little calf is safe and sound back with the herd.

Artist's Note: This photo was taken a few years ago on a trip to Joshua Tree National Park. Did you know the acorn folk have been to 37 National Parks?

I was surprised to find so many large patches of reindeer moss growing in Terra Nova National Park. It was so soft that I thought it would make the perfect sleeping spot for my acorns.

Hit the open road... it's the National Day Of Motoring! Dusty Rhodes is celebrating by taking his sportster off-roading today. He knows an out of the way spot in the remote wilderness of Dark Oak Forest where trees are replaced with rocks. No roads here. Just look ahead and find your own way through the jumble of boulders. He better have a spare tire in the trunk and a full tank of gas. There are no service stations this far out.

Artist's Note: I photographed this scene in Gros Morne National Park at the Tablelands. This unique area is actually the earth's mantle. I had fun photographing the acorns as well as moving some rocks for other creative photography. I will share those later.

Petey's quest continued. He was determined to find his way back home and to his friends. A strong east wind carried him high into the air and a familiar call whispered in his ear. He followed the sound. Looking down on a tiny island, Petey saw familiar black and white shapes. His excitement turned to disappointment. These weren't his friends - but they were close! Petey soon discovered these much larger birds spoke a language similar to his own. They were quite friendly and inquisitive. After hearing his sad story, they gave Petey detailed directions for finding his way back to the realm of Dark Oak Forest where he should recognize the coastline. As he windmilled off the cliff, his new friends wished him good luck finding his friends.

I created a puffin made from a foxtail palm nut, chestnut, birch bark, and leaves. I brought it to Newfoundland to photograph with a real puffin. Luckily, I had a very cooperative one.

Take some advice from Will B. Snoozin.... relax. It's National Hammock Day! Whittle out some time in your day to lay down and gently sway side to side. Don't have a hammock? Lay down on your couch and use your imagination. Today is the perfect day to set your sights on the back of your eyelids.

Artist's Note: I took this image at Trunk Beach on the island of St. John in the USVI. I photographed two hammocks on the beach scenes, the other is my Facebook banner. Looking back, I should have done one with a girl in the hammock. Next time.

Petey, the wayward puffin, is on a mission. During a strong Nor'Easter he was swept away like a toupee in a tornado. When the winds calmed, he discovered he was out in the middle of the ocean, all alone, with no land in sight. There were icebergs, though. Large, blue and white icebergs that creaked and groaned as they cracked and rolled. Petey thrives on the cold. He also knows that delicious capelin hang out in the shadows of the icy mammoths. He fed from one iceberg then flew to the next, berg hopping across the deep blue waters until he found an unfamiliar shoreline. The search continues, his friends must be nearby.
