Another aerial update from the fast-growing Grand Prairie Parkway & Kettlestone area in Waukee.

With the snow finally gone, Waukee Aerial was able to get back up in the air this week to capture progress on the new retail buildings going up at Kettlestone Lakes.

This project sits within the larger Kettlestone development corridor, a long-term vision for Waukee that will bring together restaurants, retail, offices, housing, and entertainment in one of the fastest-growing areas of the metro.

A couple interesting notes about the project:

• Kettlestone Lakes is part of Waukee’s larger Kettlestone master plan designed to create a major commercial and lifestyle district on the west side of the city.
• The development is planned to include retail, restaurants, medical offices, and service businesses serving the rapidly growing surrounding neighborhoods.
• With new roads, utilities, and infrastructure already in place, this corridor is quickly becoming one of the most active construction areas in the Des Moines metro.

From the air you can really see the progress taking shape — building shells, parking lots, and site work are all moving along quickly.

Another aerial look at the major road work underway near Warrior Lane and University Avenue in Waukee.

Crews have started clearing trees and prepping the area as work begins on one of the city’s bigger transportation projects — extending University Avenue so it will finally connect through to 6th Street. From the air you can really see the early stages taking shape as the corridor is opened up for utilities, grading, and future road construction.

A few quick notes about the project:

• This work is part of Phase 2 of Waukee’s University Avenue improvement project, which will eventually close the last gap between Warrior Lane and 6th Street.

• The project will modernize several surrounding roads and intersections, including improvements around Warrior Lane and the nearby connecting streets.

• When finished, the extension will help create a continuous east-west route across Waukee and improve traffic flow throughout the area.

Right now it’s mostly tree removal and site prep, but it’s interesting to see the first visible steps of a project that will significantly change how people travel through this part of the city.

Another aerial look at progress in the Grand Prairie Parkway / Kettlestone area of Waukee.

Construction is moving along nicely on the future Breakfast Club location near the Kettlestone corridor. From the air you can really start to see the new building, parking layout, and site work coming together as crews push the project forward.

The Breakfast Club is known for its modern brunch menu, craft cocktails, and upbeat atmosphere, and this new location will add another popular destination to one of the fastest-growing commercial areas in the metro.

A few quick notes about the site:

• The restaurant sits within the rapidly developing Kettlestone district, Waukee’s long-term mixed-use growth area.

• The corridor around Grand Prairie Parkway and Kettlestone Boulevard continues to attract new restaurants, retail, and service businesses as the surrounding neighborhoods expand.

• Once complete, this spot will become another gathering place for locals looking for weekend brunch or breakfast meetings.

With the snow finally melted, we were able to get back out to capture fresh aerial imagery of the I-80 / I-35 / Hickman Road interchange reconstruction in the Des Moines metro.

This massive Iowa DOT project is transforming one of the busiest corridors in the region, modernizing the interchange to improve safety and prepare for traffic volumes expected to grow significantly over the next two decades. The scale of work here is impressive, with new bridges, roadway reconstruction, and major improvements to the surrounding transportation network.

One of the most exciting updates from last week was the placement of two new pedestrian bridges over the interstate ramps. These bridges will help connect the Clive Greenbelt Trail and surrounding trail systems, giving cyclists and pedestrians a safe way to cross the interchange while keeping them separated from high-speed traffic.

Construction is moving fast at Kettlestone Central, the heart of Waukee’s next great dining and social destination. One of the most anticipated openings is The Breakfast Club, known for its fun brunch atmosphere, creative cocktails, and unforgettable food — now coming right here to Waukee in 2026.

Right next door, Kettlestone Social is taking shape — a massive new food and entertainment hall designed for gathering with friends, discovering local vendors, catching live events, and enjoying the best flavors of the metro in one place. It’s the kind of spot that’ll make “let’s meet at Kettlestone” the new weekend routine.

While Steak ‘n Shake adds some variety, we’re especially excited about what’s still to come in Kettlestone Central and Waukee Towne Center, where even more restaurants and retail are in the works.

“Just captured some spectacular footage of the old Waukee Water Tower coming down!
After decades of service, this local landmark is finally being retired. Here are a couple of fun tidbits:
• That tower was built to handle the growing demands of our metro-area community and had served the city for many years before becoming outdated.
• The new tower — right next door — holds an impressive 2,500,000 gallons of water, replacing the previous 500,000-gallon tank.

It’s bittersweet to see the old structure go, but the upgrade means better capacity and future-proofing for our city’s growth. If you’re a local history buff, it’s worth pausing for a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come. Stay tuned for more video from the archives of the old tower over the years!
