Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad between 1901 and 1905, the Harsimus Stem Embankment in Jersey City eliminated dangerous street-level crossings. This massive brownstone structure carried multiple tracks directly to the waterfront. It was officially decommissioned in the 1990s and its overhead spans were dismantled in 1996, leaving the 120+ year old segment standing today amidst the modern buildings of downtown Jersey City.

The “Hemingway’s Building” at 136 Newark Avenue in downtown Jersey City is a prime example of Late Victorian Italianate commercial architecture, dating to the late 19th century. It is believed to be named for Samuel Hemingway, a prominent Newark Avenue merchant whose china, glass, and crockery business helped define Jersey City’s thriving downtown shopping district.

Over the years, the building housed a variety of businesses, including the J.K. Sealey School of Music, and today has been restored with upper-floor condominiums and ground-floor retail, continuing the building’s long commercial tradition along the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza

As wealthy New Yorkers moved north from downtown, Ladies’ Mile emerged along Broadway between 14th and 23rd Streets in the 1870s, becoming America’s first great luxury shopping district. Anchored by high-end department stores including Lord & Taylor, Arnold Constable, B. Altman, Siegel-Cooper, and W. & J. Sloane, it drew fashionable shoppers from across the country before retail shifted north to Fifth Avenue in the early 1900s.

Among its finest surviving landmarks are the Lord & Taylor Building (1869-70), a magnificent French Second Empire flagship designed by James H. Giles (seen here with the hazy sun peeking through), and the neighboring Arnold Constable “Palace of Trade” (1869; expanded 1872 and 1876-77), whose nickname reflected its immense size and status as one of the world’s largest and most luxurious department stores.

Both remain outstanding examples of Victorian Second Empire architecture, distinguished by their ornate cast-iron facades and mansard roofs.
